DARBY, Pa. (WPVI) -- One person is dead and two others are injured after a gunman opened fire in an office on the campus of Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital Thursday afternoon.

It was around 2:30 p.m. when Darby Borough Police were called out to the hospital's wellness center, located across the street from the main building on Lansdowne Avenue, for the report of a shooting.

Officials say a patient came into psychiatric unit on the third floor of the building and opened fire on his case worker, killing her.

The gunman was then shot when a doctor opened fire on him. The suspect then returned fire on the doctor.

The doctor was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with graze wounds, but is expected to be released.

The suspect is currently in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

At 6:10 a live interview with the DELCO DA the DA was asked if the Dr. had a "permit" for the gun the DA said he didn't know at this time but he might not have needed one unless the weapon was concealed on or about his person.

Sad state of affairs when I feel good about a incident that left 1 dead, the times we live in it's amazing how people react. I read a news clip that said a legally arm man saved a clerks life buy stopping a stabbing and the store posted a sign after the fact no firearms allowed..

DARBY, Pa. (AP) — A doctor who was grazed by gunfire from a patient in his office at a suburban hospital on Thursday helped stop him by apparently returning fire with his own weapon and severely injuring him, but not before a caseworker was killed, authorities said.
The patient opened fire after entering the office with the caseworker, District Attorney Jack Whelan said. Witnesses reported hearing yelling before the gunshots.
Several hours after the shooting, investigators had only limited information on what happened inside the closed office but believe the doctor, a psychiatrist, "from all accounts, would have acted in self-defense," Whelan said.
The doctor, who suffered a graze wound to his head, "faced a situation where his life was in jeopardy," Whelan said.
Yeadon Police Chief Donald Molineux said that, "without a doubt, I believe the doctor saved lives."

Kinda takes a little steam out of the argument that armed teachers won't be helpful in school shootings. Shrug
I don't suffer from insanity.
I enjoy every minute of it.

From what some articles are hinting, the hospital policy allowed no one but law enforcement to carry guns....but that this patient had had other previous run-ins with staff, and it is guessed that this could have been partly why the doc carried against policy.

Darn good thing he did. Sorry for his case worker, but relieved the doc prevented what could have been a massacre.

Only the military and the police should have guns. And doctors.

The article is very positive about the Doctor's heroic actions. Maybe they could have left "gun toting" out of the headline.
