12-Year-Old Girl Shoots Intruder During Home Invasion In Bryan County

Quote:BRYAN COUNTY, Oklahoma -

A 12-year-old girl took matters into her own hands during a home invasion in southeast Oklahoma.

It happened on Wednesday when the girl was home alone. She told police a stranger rang the doorbell, then went around to the back door and kicked it in. She called her mom, Debra St. Clair, who told her to get the family gun, hide in a closet and call 911.

One of the comments on the article:

Quote:Teach your kids to ALWAYS answer the door when they are home alone. Tell them to never OPEN the door, but call out "My dad is busy right now and can't come to the door". Burglars don't want a confrontation (or your children) they just want your STUFF. They knock first to make sure nobody is home (if you answer they offer to do yard work or say they are at the wrong house). In this case he rang the doorbell before he broke in, but she didn't answer. So glad this brave little girl is okay, but she is forever traumatized.

Burglars don't want your kids? How many times do we read about criminals breaking in and just tying up the kids? What about that family in CT where the wife and daughter were raped before the house was burned down? And that was when the whole family was home. Never trust a criminal to lay off your kids for any reason. If they were nice people, they wouldn't be robbing your damn house.

I agree with Warpt. Calling out may sometimes be the right thing to do. Other times...not so much.

I also agree with Warpt and Val. Teach your kids as soon has they are mature enough how to defend themselves.

Quote:The intruder made his way through the house, and as he was opening the door of the closet, the young girl shot him through the closet door. The intruder left the house and the girl was found unharmed. The police arrived and took the man into custody.

What would have happened had the girl not been armed? We can’t be sure, but there are far too many stories of young girls being kidnapped, murdered, and raped.

Just another snippet from the a fore mentioned quoted article.

THANK GOODNESS:
1 - gun was loaded in the house
2 - gun was not locked up
3 - girl knew where the gun was
4 - girl did not hesitate to shoot when the door handle moved
5 - mother (via a phone call) told daughter to get the gun, hide and call 911
Quote:“I said you go get the gun and you get in my closet right now and you call 911,”
6 - 911 operator did not tell her NOT to use the gun
7 - If you go to the above link, you will see what a well placed shot the girl made
8 - luckily this was a Glock, with no external safety, AND it had one loaded in the chamber

UNFORTUNATE THINGS, even though all worked out well:
1- girl was not taught how to shoot (never shot a gun before this)
2 -girl called her mom before getting the gun
3 -girl was not taught before her 12th birthday what to do if a bad guy tried to break in

AWFUL funny how so many of the arguments anti's use against guns in the home, guns in a home with children, loaded guns in the home, guns loaded w/ one in the chamber, guns without external safeties....possibly saved this young girls life OR kept her from serious harm.

I even know supposed gun rights advocates who disagree with many of the above items.

And sadly with all of that land she has never played with the gun/guns before. I'd be shooting everyday!

Her words in the video,

"I think it's gonna change me a whole lot. Knowing that I can hold my head up high, and nothing can hurt me anymore."

Sounds like she knows she did the right thing, the only thing she could to protect herself. This girl isn't gonna need years of therapy. She needs some range time!! Flea

This story:

http://news.yahoo.com/okla-girl-12-shoot...ories.html

"Kendra St. Clair, 12, was at home alone in Oklahoma, when loud banging began on the door to her family's home. Soon, the glass shattered and an intruder had entered."

is being discussed on one of the left leaning forums I frequent, and these are some of the replies in that thread that were made by some of the liberal forum members:

"Quote:

It is far more likely that the perp was merely after money to buy drugs.
"

"Why do you keep insisting that the girl was going to raped or killed? What evidence do you have for suggesting the perp was looking for the girl? You posting tells far more about you than the reality.

The reality is that a 12 year old had access to a handgun. I find that far more frightening than any of your good/bad paranoid conjecturing."

"So the death penalty is a proper punishment for burglary?

While this one turned out well (at least for the girl, not so much for the burglar), I wonder how many stories you have about kids accidentally killing themselves or someone else for every one good story.
"

Colors represent different replies in that thread. These are just a few, there are more like that...intruder is the victim, girl who did the shooting is a child who shouldn't have had a gun..etc..etc..

The only comment I will make about the kid having access to a gun is that at 12 y/o I did have access to pistols that were in our house, but I had also been shooting since I was ten, and I had parents and siblings who had taken the time to show me safe firearm handling practices..
