17 y/o dead in FLA after home invasion

Quote:A Miami woman shot and killed a teenage home intruder last week, authorities said. Now, relatives of the teen are saying she acted unjustly and should be prosecuted.

Trevon Johnson, 17, burglarized the home of a 54-year-old old woman last Thursday, according to Miami-Dade police.

The woman woman told police that she was not home when the break-in occurred, but her surveillance system alerted her that there was an intruder. She said she rushed home and found the teen climbing out of a window.

“She observed a subject leaving the home through the rear,” police Detective Dan Ferrin told WFOR-TV.

A confrontation then took place, according to police, and shots were fired. Police said they were on scene seconds after the shooting and performed CPR on the teen. Johnson was then rushed to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

“What’s wrong with her?” Johnson’s sister Nisha Johnson asked. “She did not have to shoot him.”

Johnson told WFOR her brother was a student at D. A. Dorsey Technical College. She and other relatives are outraged by the shooting.

Nautika Harris says she is outraged by her cousin's death.
“I don’t care if she have her gun license or any of that. That is way beyond the law … way beyond,” Johnson’s cousin Nautika Harris told WFOR. “He was not supposed to die like this. He had a future ahead of him. Trevon had goals … he was a funny guy, very big on education, loved learning.”

“You have to look at it from every child’s point of view that was raised in the hood,” Harris continued. “You have to understand … how he gonna get his money to have clothes to go to school? You have to look at it from his point of view.”

Thus far, police appear to be siding with the homeowner who they say was protecting her property.

“She’s a person that is a little distraught because this is her home that someone obviously was in,” Ferrin said.

Police said the woman was taken to a police station for questioning and has cooperated with detectives.

Investigators told WFOR that they are still investigating the incident, but in the meantime, they want the public to remember that, if possible, it is best not to take these types of situations into one’s own hands.

“If there’s any type of situation that happens or they believe there’s a burglary at the home or any type of confrontation, dial 911. Have the police make that confrontation,” Ferrin said. “That’s what we’re here for.”

The case has been handed over to state attorney’s office, but so far, no charges have been filed against the homeowner.

“It’s no reason she should have waited until I think he walked out the yard to try to shoot him,” Harris said. “If she called the police already, why would she shoot him?”

Relatives told WFOR they don’t believe Johnson stole anything from the woman’s home, but detectives would not confirm that.

So another aspiring rap star cut down too early... And how else is he supposed to get money?

"She acted unjustly"? Because stealing stuff from hard working people is obviously justified in some circles. Dodgy

Stop enabling criminals and criminal behavior.

Since Nautika is so well versed in law she should have know burglary is a crime.

You can't shoot somebody leaving your house.

Especially if the intruder is black and you are white, and the kid needs money for *drugscough* school.

Seriously though she probably misjudged this one a bit. At least by today's standards. Hope she gets through it okay.

Unless the intruder was included in "shots fired" in which case it was clearly self defense.

Either way, gotta love how the family acts like he did nothing wrong.

There was mention of a confrontation before the shooting, so he may have not been leaving the house when he was shot. They don't go into detail Since the police seem to be siding with the shooter, it appears that there is more to the story than being reported.

Even worse, then, for the family acting like their son had some kind of right to be there.

Shows how badly race relations have degraded under Obama.

FL passed Castle Doctrine in 2005.

Seems to me that she'd be covered if she confronted him when he was leaving and he got combative.

I'd probably do the same thing in confronting somebody leaving my house after unauthorized entry. If he just ran off, I wouldn't shoot him. Unfortunately, the kid ended up getting shot as a result of that confrontation.

It appears that he and his community feel justified in stealing from others, simply because they want something. That attitude leads to bad choices, and bad choices lead to bad outcomes.

It's too bad he got shot. Ultimately, he'd still be alive if he wasn't stealing her stuff.

Looks like Treyvon Martin 2.0 in the making here.

The homeowner is a bit of a moron. Why out yourself in a possible dangerous situation? I could totally understand if she was home during the robbery, but she wasn't. She rushed there, and when she saw the kid sneaking away, she confronted him. Just a series of bad decisions.

I have no sympathy for the little shithead, but I doubt I'll have any for her either, if she gets charged with something.

Given FL Castle Doctrine, the homeowner is probably legally protected.

Still, the burglar's family willsue, and she'll have to pay a good lawyer to get the case tossed on Castle Doctrine grounds.

Above all, she took a young life.

For what?

Stuff?

I think maybe 30 years of missing some stuff might be better than 30 years of realizing I'd taken a life. Quite a few writers of books on self-defense point out that it's a consideration. You're not going to be the same; your life isn't going to be the same.

Okay, if he threatened her, all bets are off. But if he just moved to get away, and she shot him while he was fleeing, man that would be a heavy burden.

All that said, the stupid is powerful in the way that kid's family thinks. It's pretty clear that the reason he was there in the first place had a lot to do with a total lack of basic values.
