2016 Spring Turkey Season
#1
Who's getting ready to bring home that gobbler?

I've got a wild flock that comes out in my front yard every morning. Not sure how many are toms. I set up the game camera today, got some practice targets, bought a jake and hen decoy and dusted off the old scratch call. I want to take a turkey with the VEPR 12 this year, fall turkey is the only time I've ever been out hunting them so this is my first try at the shotgun season.

If i can't get these to come in, there aren't any bearded birds or I want to fill another tag, I have one other location with a big flock of birds. Should be able to fill a couple tags the first week no problem.

Well, I checked the game camera today to make sure it was running good and I had over three thousand images on the memory cardDodgy. None of which caught anything but a little robin. Had to reposition the camera, trim away some branches that were triggering the motion sensor and changed the settings a little bit. I'll check it again tomorrow to make sure it's set up better and then it'll sit for a few days. Hopefully I'll get some images to post up of these turkeys and find out for sure how many there are and how many are legal birds.

I leave Turkeys alone in the spring. Every time I see a farmer spreading manure there's a flock of turkeys not far behind.
I'd rather hunt them in the fall after they had something else to eat for awhile.

Sounds like you have to find some better turkey hunting land. There isn't a farm probably 2 miles east or 5 miles west of here that spreads manure. To the south of me is state game land and to the north of me is a half mile of rolling fields leading to the interstate. These birds are healthy and manure free. Big Grin

I wish I could find some better spots. Some of the places I've hunted since I was young are changing hands now that farmers are dying off and the new owners get shitty with you if you ask to hunt. I really wish I could find/afford a good chunk of land to call my own. Even then people rape it for all it's worth and then try to sell it for a mint.

No trail cam photos to share yet but an update.

Got home about an hour after the rain stopped and checked the trail cam. While setting it back up I could hear a gobbler about 500 yards away down across the creek leading to the edge of the mountain. Decided to see if I could get them in any closer so I sat on my front porch overlooking the creek and called on my slate call for a bit. Wouldn't you know I got 4 big toms to come in about 50 yards away and I could hear two more in other spots in the woods.

Man, I can't wait till I can have some decoys out and a shotgun in my hands. Seeing those big ol' birds strutting around and fanned out in the front yard is exciting.

Hope I can get some clearer pictures soon. For now, you'll have to settle for a grainy cell phone pic from the second floor window in the house.

Well, it's almost time. Didn't manage to get a trail cam picture of the turkeys though. I've got the VEPR 12 sighted in and ready to go harvest a big ol' tom in the forenoon.

Good luck out there tomorrow everyone. Stay safe.

I see turkeys around us all the time EXCEPT when it's season.

That was my experience on Saturday! The weather and my schedule hasn't cooperated this week yet, hoping to get out again this Saturday.
