Three people are now confirmed dead, according to Monroe County Coroner Bob Allen. And at least three are in critical condition following the shooting at tonight's Ross Township municipal meeting.

Two men died at the scene and one who was helicoptered out later died.

West End Open Space Commission Executive Director Bernie Kozen reportedly tackled the shooter and turned the gun onto the shooter.

Township Supervisor Howard Beers' daughter, Alissa Rutt, got a call from her dad where he said, "Just listen to what I have to say: No matter what you hear, I'm ok."

The shooter was conscious and taken out on a stretcher, according to reports at the scene.

A Pocono Record reporter who was at the meeting reported that the alleged gunman had a pistol with a scope and shot through a wall into the meeting. You can read this account, here. http://bit.ly/16qadHv

One person was shot in the leg, two were hit in the stomach and one was shot in the head, according to early unconfirmed reports.

I am very shocked and saddened to hear about this. This is all the more reason to allow council members and citizens attending the meeting their constitutional right to bear arms, especially if a police officer isn't present for it. Heck, I'd still want to exercise my right even if a cop was present. The guy in this case was shooting through the wall with a scope. He could take out the cop first and leave everyone helpless.

Some cities have an officer attend them. I'm assuming this was a small town with no history of violent crime anywhere in it and no LEO was present.

I'll sit out here in the middle of nowhere and trade with the amish while you all are fighting.. Hopefully my mortgage company will just shut down whioe its going on.

Plague too. We need a good plague. 70% need to disappear and I wouldnt mind if I was one of them.. this is getting ridiculous.

Sad news. Another sick and twisted individual. Cheers to the guy who got the tackle and subdued the gunman. Heroism at its finest there.

Snippet of what they think started it all.

Quote:Ross Township man fights to keep his land

Ross Township hopes to buy a Flyte Road property, deemed an eyesore and up for sheriff's sale next month, to clean it up and remove what it calls a stream obstruction.

Ruling in the township's favor, Monroe County Court last August ordered Rockne Newell, 59, to vacate and never again occupy or use the property, unless he has the proper permits to do so.

The township's efforts to take over the land he's owned since 1990 are the latest development in an 18-year battle against Newell.

"This is total (horse excrement)," said Newell, who has been living out of his 1984 Fiero and in abandoned buildings since being ordered to vacate.

"They have no right to kick me off my property. They call my property an 'eyesore.' When I bought it, it was one of only three properties on the entire road that didn't have what they call 'junk.'"

Unkempt

The unmown property now has the largest number of visibly cluttered items, including tires, cinderblocks and piles of lumber, on Flyte Road.

Unemployed for years due to an injury from a crash, Newell said he collects and uses items other people throw away, which is cheaper than buying items in stores, and scraps and sells what he doesn't use.

"I don't mow the property because I don't like lawns," said Newell, who has been struggling to pay property and school taxes after the mortgage was paid up years ago. "I prefer trees. Trees make the property less likely to flood when there's heavy rain."
This will be the best security for maintaining our liberties. A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins. -Ben Franklin

Very sad. I drive by there on a daily basis through Saylorsburg. When I was charting a few shortcuts in that area, I have seen some properties that look, shall I say, worn and weathered.

It his property. Its his land and apparently he paid his taxes too. They stole his land. Now I understand. This falls into the "is it time yet" yes category.
