That will be my next rifle. I already have a 45/70 Buffalo Classic, so I can only comment on the round itself and those are all handloads.

Pros. Lots of handload options, especially for the Marlin.
405gr flat points hit like a sledgehammer.

Cons. Higher pressure handloads kick like a mule.

The "guide gun" only has a 4 round cap and a straight stock, while a few of the others have 6 round caps, but large loop levers. Some manufacturers are making the higher pressure factory loads for the non-trapdoor rifles, like the Marlin and Ruger. The Ruger actions are the stronger ones. The Marlin actions are rated in the middle and the trapdoors are the weakest.

Yep, that's the one I am looking at, but can't decide between that and the stainless.

They used to make one with a ported barrel. Not sure if they still do.

I haven't seen the ported one anywhere for a while.

I would keep an eye open for an older one, the new ones are now made by Remington, and rumor has it, suffer from some quality and reliability issues.

Mine is a 1975 and I love it, but I must admit it's more of a safe queen more than anything and I really should get it out and love her a little.
