Its essentially a zip gun. You younger folks probably never heard of one but they were big back in the 50s. Every self-respecting "drape" had one back then. Most were so bad you couldn't hit a damn thing with one. Break off someone's telescoping car aerial and you have a .22 cal smooth bore barrel. Most were fired slingshot style using a strip of rubber and a tack as a firing pin. There were as many designs as there were kids making them.

Just want to remind everyone that disguised weapons are classified as AOW's and require registration and a $200 tax stamp to build, or $5 tax stamp to transfer.

Homemade "zip guns" only require registration as AOW's if they do not look like a typical firearm. Otherwise they are completely legal in PA.

AOW? And you are saying if a 'zip gun' looks like a normal gun I have to take no action to make it legal?

That's correct, for PA at least. Assuming you aren't prohibited and it's in a configuration that isnt regulated by the NFA, such as short barreled rifle/shotgun, full auto, etc. It doesnt even need a serial number unless you sell it.

Hmmm thank you for the good info. I have made some small .22 cal things before that you shot with a rubber band when I was younger and never knew if it was legal or not...

And what does AOW mean?

Zip guns that resemble regular guns are covered as such. It's completely legal to build your own firearm as long as you're not building something that is prohibited.

NFA covers guns that look like other things. Pen guns, umbrella guns and the like.
