Quote:750,000 Pa. hunters open 2-week rifle deer season

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Warmer than average temperatures and mostly clear weather was expected as an estimated 750,000 hunters take to the woods as deer rifle hunting season opens in Pennsylvania.

Hunters in most areas can take bucks and does, though antlered deer only can be targeted in some areas through Dec. 6. The season runs through Dec. 14 and is starting later than normal because Thanksgiving was later than usual this year.

That's quite a decrease from previous years. If I recall correctly we were over 1.1 Million at one time.

Just got back from 2 days hunting. One day in Fayettenam, today Somerset PA. Not a darn thing. Yesterday, saw a fat rabbit and some mice. Today, only saw a blue jay. Scat yes, tracks plenty. But not so much as a doe sighting.

Took my daughter for her first outting, wish it was more exciting for her Sad

And yes, the number of hunters in PA has gone down considerably, most likely never to return. With 8 kids, my wife and I are trying our hardest to bring the number of future hunters up, but dammit, we cant do it alone!

You think the archers and muzzleloaders scared them off by now?

No, not that. My wife saw 2 dozen about 2 farms away from us in a field between two houses. She laughed when she told me, 'cause "it's like they know where they cant be shot at". It's not "like" they know lady, they know, they know Sad

Hubby and son leaving tomorrow for their annual hunting trip, although it's my son's first time--he's 13. The hunting season in this state stinks, although I guess it's because there are SO many people. We lived in SC for a few years, and they have like a month or two long season, so you can just go to the woods every weekend for weeks and pretty much get something eventually. Here, you only have a stab at it, and not a very long one.

But hey, it's hunting.

My dad just got his annual elk...400 lbs of meat. He made his longest shot ever, too....598 yards. BUT he lives out west (Utah) so he has all the fun. :-)

We've got one about like that servicing his herd of does on the farm where we keep our horses. And no, sorry, you can't Smile That's probably why he and they aren't very shy. Hooved rats keep knocking the fence-rails down.
