A computer program named "Eugene Goostman" has convinced a third of human judges into thinking it is a 13-year-old boy, becoming the first machine to pass the Turing test, Hannah Furness of The Telegraph reports.

Computer science pioneer and World War II codebreaker Alan Turing created the test in 1950 in a paper which opens with the words: "I propose to consider the question, 'Can machines think?'"

He argued that if a machine dupes 30% of human participants during a series of chats, then it is exhibiting intelligent behavior that is indistinguishable from that of a human. Passed that threshold, according to Turing, the idea of a "thinking machine" would no longer be contradictory.

The guy was arrested for being gay in the 50s. I don't know why that was thrown in there but hey. Nice trivia.

Machines are not necessarily getting smarter, but the Human judges are definitely getting dumber. I am sure you could get 30% of the populous to emphatically declare that their cell phone is sentient.

I bet you couldn't, at least not without defining "sentient" to those that you're asking.

I'm guessing it's like a really good Siri..... All they had to do was try to think of every possible question that could conceivably be asked and enter all that data. A computer can only go so far as it's maker.

Unless one evolves, I guess......

Prof. Alan Turning, in spite of being key to cracking the Enigma code and thus hastening the end of WW2, in spite of being perhaps the single most brilliant mind in the early studies of information technology and the infant science of cybernetics, was hounded for his homosexuality.

They pumped hormones into him to try to make him "straight."

He ultimately took his own life in 1954, apparently as a result of his shaming and legalized bullying.

His story has since become a cautionary tale for society.

"Our best and brightest" is an understatement.
