A defensive shooting is really two encounters. The first is dealing with the bad guy who means to harm you and the second is dealing with the police (and courts) in the aftermath. The first I feel like I'm prepared to handle but the second frankly scares the hell out of me. The legal system like most of our government is so complicated and filled with pitfalls that the average Joe is really not prepared to deal with it. To even give yourself a chance in that system requires expensive representation and we know the courts are not friendly to gun owners.
I'm really glad Streaker brought this up, it's given me something to think about.
Indeed. After my fiasco after having only drawn on a guy, I hope to NEVER have to do that again, much less shoot someone. The shooting would be hard enough to deal with, but the "justice" system is damned near impossible.
I hope that if I am ever forced with the decision to shoot, that there are lots of cameras and that it is obvious that it was a good shoot.
