A Unique and Excellent Little EDC Utility Folder, the Spyderco Meerkat
#1
I'm in the process of doing a series of videos on the different locking mechanisms that can be found on folding knives and this is the first installment.

The Meerkat is a very cool little knife, perfect for everyday tasks. Excellent blade steel, can take a very fine edge, has decent edge retention, and is very corrosion resistant and is also fairly tough. I can't recommend it enough.

This video is really meant to showcase the unique lock, and not really review the knife.

What are those blades called that have the groove cut in them so they open themselves when you are pulling it out of your pocket. I think they are called Emerson blades, But I'm not sure.

Is there any reason this locking mechanism is preferable over a liner lock? I think a liner lock is the easiest (that I've used) for me to manipulate one handed with minimal effort.

I don't think it is preferable. It's a pain in the ass to close one handed.
It's just something different.

Stay tuned, I'll be doing some more videos on locks, some good one handed closers too. Hopefully I'll have some spare time tonight to do it.

Thanks for the response. I was wondering if it is perhaps a stronger design or less likely to fail. I have to imagine there is some reason most folders I see have the lock on the spine, I just don't know what it is. I'll definitely stay tuned! I don't know a whole lot about knives other than those I've tried, but I find them very interesting.

Emerson Wave.

Thank you, I was at a MD gun/knife show the other day. And of course all the knife vendors were foreign but I asked every one if the had any emerson blades or "emerson knifes" and no one did...

And man did they have some nice LED flashlights. The one was so huge and bright it was not even funny. Even had a battery life indicator on the back for it. Like it was so bright I could not look at the beam shining at the floor without my eyes hurting and while putting my hand over it I could feel the heat!!! FROM AN LED!!. But I wasn't dropping no $300 on it. Even thought I could see for miles with it. And it had the strobe options.
