Active Shooter at El Paso Military Hospital
#1
No further information, just that there is a confirmed active shooter at an El Paso Military Hospital

Update: "When asked if the incident resembled two separate shootings at Fort Hood, which left 13 dead in 2009 and four dead in 2014, a spokesman for Fort Bliss told Fox News, 'oh, no, no, no ... nothing like that at all.'" - Fox News

Regardless, this stuff is very concerning. Military hospitals, as everybody should already know, are gun free zones. My wife asked me to not disclose who her employeris, so I'll just say that she's a Certified Pediatric RN, and works in military hospitals. She's also requested to work on medical Naval vessels, but been denied 3 times for that.

Edit: I was just talking to my wife about this. She said it's ironic this is happening since everybody at her hospital was just told to take computer training on how to handle an active shooter scenario.

My girlfriend works for the feds and had to take the same training. She said it was all bullshit and knows the only thing that can stop an active shooter is a good guy/gal with a gun. The security guards at her building aren't even armed. Rolleyes

It's not just federal institutions. I just did my annual online safety training today and dealing with an active shooter was part of it.

And, yeah, it's BS. "Throw things at the shooter if evacuation isn't possible." Umm, yeah, that'll work. Rolleyes

Active shooter training has some good points to it, anything you can glean to add to your overall knowledge base is a good thing. While I agree that the "barricade yourself in a room and wait for help" is not going to stop anything, but having been told something to do is better than standing there and wondering what to do for those who don't consider such events as possible.

Last training I had when I was in the guard involved the computer based training, but also a 'live' element to it where we made plans as to what our options could be to keep the person out, or subdue them based upon where we were in the building.

But yes, other than the gates or main entry points military bases are huge expanses of unprotected spaces with people trained and certified in the use of firearms being prevented from having access to them.

My wife's hospital is patrolled by armed military police. It's a VA and military hospital rolled into 1. They call it a Federal Healthcare Center.

In other news, I just received permission from my Training Counselor that I can bring a Force on Force defensive training course he wrote with me to Philly to teach. He will be working with me so that I can teach it as he intended. He wrote the course based on his 14 years experience as a law enforcement instructor. This course gets rid of the square range and introduces pain inoculation.
