Link is dead, main page says off lock-down and there was no threat.

Likely a military spouse saw someone open carrying an assault rifle, and didn't realize it was military police.

Open carrying assault rifles in some locations is just asking for trouble, apparently.

Kind of asinine when you consider that even AF troops have M-16s, M-4s, etc.

MPs don't carry rifles on base. They carry M9s. Same thing happened in Spokane in 1994. Guy shot up the base hospital and a bunch of people outside. MP with an M9 killed him from long range with a shot that required the planets to align to make. My stepdad was stationed there at the time and was part of the group that checked the rest of the base for other shooters. It was the same week a B52 crashed on base.

WRONG! On AF bases the Security Police will definitely carry M-16s or M-4s, especially if the troop in question did not qualify with his handgun during the last round of quals. I know, I was one and I missed quals one time due to having multiple appts at the same time. Had to carry an M-16 on a gate for two weeks before I could get in with the next round of quals.

Yep... we had two MPs with M-4s "guarding" us... a company sized heavy weapons unit... to make sure we didnt cross this big red paint line on the tarmac because they thought we might steal an F-15 or some dumb thing. The chick actually said she would shoot anyone who stepped in the red zone. The Lt. Col. who was hitching a ride on our fligt was, umm... less than amused. We sat on the tarmac for 3 days but never saw Annie Oakley after a HMMWV came up and swept those two idiots away.
