ALIQUIPPA, Pa. - Woman faces charges of stealing police cruiser while cuffed

Quote:ALIQUIPPA, Pa. —A woman has been ordered to stand trial on charges she stole a police cruiser and led officers on an 80 mph chase -- all while her hands were cuffed behind her.

Center Township police say 27-year-old Roxanne Rimer squeezed through an opening from the back seat into the front of their police car and drove away, leading officers on a chase, weaving in and out of traffic in Beaver County before she crashed into a hillside and jumped out.

How could a handcuffed woman in a cop car climb out of the back seat, through the cage, into the front, and drive away at up to 100 mph? Police in Beaver County say it really happened.

Center Township police released the dashcam video that shows the incredible high-speed pursuit of Roxanne Rimer, who they said was arrested after allegedly stealing earrings from a Kohl's store Jan. 14 and then drove away in their car.

The video shows Rimer handcuffed and taken to the police cruiser. Her mother, Malinda Greene, was handcuffed for questioning and taken to a second police car. Greene said she watched her daughter land in the driver's seat of the police car after climbing through a 12-by-11 inch window from the back to the front.

"She's just little," Greene said Tuesday. "She wiggled her way through."

Police testified at Rimer's preliminary hearing Monday that a loss prevention officer detained Rimer, who apparently gave a fake name and claimed to be a juvenile. Before they could arrive, she ran away and jumped into a car driven by her grandfather, police said. That car was pulled over moments later, and Rimer was removed, handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a police cruiser, screaming, "Mommy! Mommy!" authorities said.

Greene said she watched her daughter take off with the police car as her hands were cuffed behind her back.

"With her left knee, she steered the steering, and with her right knee, she used the gas and the brake," Greene said.

Dashcam footage shows the police car driven by Rimer ramming her family's car -- with her grandfather in the driver's seat -- and ramming another police vehicle, then accelerating to high speeds. Police estimate that she approached 100 mph.

As the stolen police car pulled away, its sirens were activated automatically, so cars moved over as Rimer traveled very fast. She led officers on a nearly 10-mile chase, weaving in and out of traffic, police said.

After 8 1/2 minutes in the video, the car stops on an isolated road, and she gets out and runs in front of the vehicle as it rolls backward.

Officers say Rimer had been able to squeeze through the opening in a partition in the police cruiser that wasn't latched and crawl into the front seat while they were searching her grandfather's car. Police don't believe the grandfather knew about the shoplifting allegation.

District Judge James DiBenedetto ordered Rimer, of Chippewa Township, to stand trial on charges including aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, fleeing and eluding police, and robbery.

Her attorney, Steven Valsamidis, argued against the aggravated assault charge -- filed because of accusations the officers were endangered -- because he said Rimer didn't intend to injure anyone and nobody was hurt.

But the judge agreed with the prosecutor, who said Rimer put both the police and her grandfather at risk.

"She was going to get out of that situation at whatever the cost," said Frank Martocci, assistant district attorney in Beaver County.
