How Guns Stack Up to Other Causes of Death in America 1:10
The U.S. Supreme Court could announce as early as Tuesday whether it will hear a challenge to a suburban Chicago law banning firearms commonly known as assault weapons.

If the court agrees to hear the case, it would cast a shadow over similar bans in seven states. But declining to take it up would boost efforts to impose such bans elsewhere, at a time of renewed interest in gun regulation after recent mass shootings.

Gun rights advocates are challenging a 2013 law passed in Highland Park, Illinois, that bans the sale, purchase, or possession of semi-automatic weapons that can hold more than 10 rounds in a single ammunition clip or magazine. In passing the law, city officials cited the 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.

The ban also lists certain specific rifles, including those resembling the AR-15 and AK-47 assault-style firearms.

Me too. Lately, the US Supreme Court has been making some good 2A related decisions, despite how liberal some of the Justices are. But, I always worry that what we've seen is as good as we're going to get.

Sorry that I'm late to the party. I can answer a lot of questions about this case. I was fighting it from the very beginning because I was living in Highland Park, IL when they passed this law. So, ask whatever questions you have. I'm do my best to answer your questions. I was so deep in that Highland Park called the FBI on me as a means to intimidate me. I was originally vetted and considered as a plaintiff. I've had conversations with Dr. Friedman. I've had many conversations with the NRA Lobbyist for the state of Illinois, and have his contact info. I also have the contact info for the top guy at the Illinois State Rifle Association. And, I have the contact info for the top person at Illinois Carry. Lastly, I've read every document, every court filing, every amicus ever submitted about this case, and heard the oral arguments in from of the 7th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals.

My first point on this case is is not just about an AWB. This is an argument on the specifics of SCOTUS's 2008 ruling in Heller, which is very vague. Both sides are arguing Heller is clear on this, and supports their claims. More interestingly, Judge Easterbrook ruled the way he did because he was upset at SCOTUS's ambiguity on how to rule on this issue, and clearly said so when he wrote his majority opinion. He knew that a ruling against Friedman would result in an appeal to SCOTUS, thus his ruling in support of Highland Park. The Supreme Court is being called out by all 3. That's why they didn't make a decision today on how they are going to proceed with this case. Now, we're going to have to wait to find out something on Monday.

Lastly, this isn't Easterbrook's first major court ruling on a Second Amendment issue, and he's 0-1 when the Supreme Court has been petitioned to hear the case. Easterbrook also voted in favor of Chicago in McDonald v Chicago. SCOTUS took up the case and overturned CA7s ruling in that case.
