B&S Ignition
#1
If you happen to have an older Briggs and Stratton engine that uses breaker points and a condenser, be aware that it's trivial to replace the type of ignition coil that uses just two screws with a newer type "Magnetron" armature that doesn't need the points and condenser.

Leave them in place or take them out (plugging the oil hole if you do). You end up with a considerably more reliable and easier-starting engine that never needs re-timing or new points.

One thing: If you're concerned about EMP, then maybe you're better off with the old system, except that EMP really only affects things that are in operation. It probably wouldn't get the encapsulated electronics in the Magnatron.

Plenty of resources online and at Amazon that give the part #'s.

I have a couple B&S engines here, I wonder if they have one that would fit my go-kart?

B&S motors have Model Type and Code numbers embossed on the covers.

What model #s do you have?

That's a good question. The one on the Go-kart has different covers than what was originally on it. I know it's a 5HP that was taken from an old gas powered tamper.

When I have a chance I'll go out and see if I can find any kind of markings on it.

At 5HP, I'm betting it's an 80000 series. If that's the case part #793281 is the Magnetron coil that fits it.

Under $20 bucks on Amazon.

Use a business card to adjust the gap between the armature and the flywheel, with the flywheel rotated to so the magnets are against the armature.

I'll be placing an Amazon order soon, I'll take a look at that and add if I can verify that it's correct. I think my generator is a B&S as well, that's a 10HP. My snow blower, and lawn mower I think are both tecumseh.
