And the net tally

Just shy of 5 1/2 qts.
That should take us through the year.

This was our first year with a late start, but we ended up with about a quart and a half

How many trees did you get it from? (And, am I right in assuming that you did it on your own property?)

How does it taste?

From my end, yes they are my trees.
I tapped 12 trees, which yielded about 70 gallons.
I do use the small 5/16 taps.

I guess taste is subjective, but I think my syrup is as good as most.
The maple flavor this year is more mild than last year, which was expected by the light amber color.

I always thought that you could only tap sugar maples. I have several maples on our property but they're not sugar maples so I never thought about tapping them.

It's getting to be that time of year! I was out yesterday helping a friend tap and run tubes for his maple surple. He set me up with a few buckets and some taps that he doesn't use anymore so I can try and do this on my own with the maple trees in my yard.

Yeah I was kicking it around over the weekend whether or not to tap this week. It doesn't look like the weather is going to hold out for long, so I'm going to wait. Last year I tapped based on a forecast 4 or five day warm up. It got nearly no sap, then they shut off again for a week or two. Looking like it's going to be too cold for my trees.

Yeah, I figured I'd wait a littl bit longer before tapping. My friend gets a jump on it because he does hundreds of trees. I help him out and it usually gets me a free gallon. The Lake is frozen solid so we're going to be cool for awhile even after the inland warms up.

Only 3 1/2 pts so far this year.
Just too damn cold, keeps shutting off, at least on my hill.
The up side is it's good sap. The trees should run good the next 4 or 5 days. Hopefully it won't warm up too fast. Looking for one gallon.
