Who has got free checking accounts lately except students in the last 5 years? I've not seen one.

The bank I work for has them. I just stick with a higher account for the perks, but we have tons of people with free accounts.

Granted you have overdraft fees, and pay for select check styles. So I guess you could say that no account is truly "free", but they are still out there.

I don't belong to one now... but when I lived in Philly I belonged to American Heritage FCU. It was great.. the people were great... the loans were super cheap.

USAA is completely free, and they reimburse me 100% of any ATM fees/charges that hit my account from any ATM.

PNC still has free checking, but I wouldn't recommend them. Somehow they managed to remove me from my own fucking bank account. "This should only happen when the primary account holder passes away..." Misspelled my name on checks and debit card, even though my name is correct on my account. Mishandled deposits, over a dozen requests to fix account information that went unanswered. Never again.

Don't you have to have immediate family that's active or retired military to get USAA?

From their site:

Who is eligible?

Active, retired and honorably separated officers and enlisted personnel of the U.S. military.

Officer candidates in commissioning programs (Academy, ROTC, OCS/OTS).

Adult children whose eligible parents have or had a USAA auto or property insurance product.

Widows and widowers of USAA members who have or had a USAA auto or property insurance policy.

Plus one for the credit unions. As a general FYI, some credit unions let relatives of qualified people join as long as the qualified person joins... one may be able to join more credit unions than is readily apparent...

I have free checking and have had it for about 4 years.

No min deposit either.
The only thing is they only allow you to write 7 checks a month, every on after that is a .50 fee.
I write 3 checks a month and everything else is paid online.

I order my checks for an outside source and wait until they do the buy two boxes get one free with free shipping, I buy checks about every two years.
