FIREARM LICENSE UNIT

The Berks County Sheriff's Department is responsible for processing all applications for a Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms. This license allows a person to carry a concealed weapon on their person or in a motor vehicle. The licenses are issued to persons who qualify, based on a background investigation conducted by the Firearm License Unit, within 45 days of the filing of the application. The license is valid for a period of 5 years. The license may be revoked at anytime for reasons of misuse or criminal activity.

Applications for a Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms maybe obtained on-line, see forms below, or by coming to one of our two locations, the Sheriff's Department on the 3rd floor of the Berks County Courthouse during our normal business hours of 8 am - 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday or Sheriff's Department Substation located at the Reading Regional Airport from 10:00am to 6:00pm (closed 2:00pm to 3:00pm), excluding holidays. Applications may also be obtained by sending a self addressed stamped enveloped to the Berks County Sheriff's Department, Firearm Licenses Unit, 633 Court Street, Reading, Pa. 19601. The Berks County Sheriff's Department has a substation in the Reading Regional Airport. Office hours there are Monday thru Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm (closed 2:00pm to 3:00pm).

The Berks County Sheriff’s Department will be issuing Pennsylvania Licenses to Carry Firearms at 5 remote locations in Berks County.

Listed below are the days of the month, locations and times of operation.

Applicants for the licenses are to bring a Pennsylvania Drivers License or Pennsylvania Photo Identification Card and payment of $20.00 cash or check. After filling out the application, a computer back ground check will immediately be performed. Upon successful completion of the back ground check, the license will be issued.
