Bloomberg: Marijuana Arrests In NYC Will Mean A Desk Appearance Ticket, Not A Night In Jail

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Thursday during his final State of the City address that those caught with “small amounts” of marijuana will no longer have to endure an overnight stay in lockup.

The following transcript comes from WNYC:

“But we know that there’s more we can do to keep New Yorkers, particularly young men, from ending up with a criminal record. Commissioner Kelly and I support Governor Cuomo’s proposal to make possession of small amounts of marijuana a violation, rather than a misdemeanor and we’ll work to help him pass it this year. But we won’t wait for that to happen.

“Right now, those arrested for possessing small amounts of marijuana are often held in custody overnight. We’re changing that. Effective next month, anyone presenting an ID and clearing a warrant check will be released directly from the precinct with a desk appearance ticket to return to court. It’s consistent with the law, it’s the right thing to do and it will allow us to target police resources where they’re needed most.”

But gold help you if you carry more than a handful of bullets.

That thar is a hangin oh-fence.
This will be the best security for maintaining our liberties. A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins. -Ben Franklin

it's a bit strange that people on the left are generally vehemently anti-gun but are usually very pro-weed.

if they understood that liberty encompasses both, we'd all be in a better position.

Bring a bullet from a free state or pepper spray that was sold by someone not licensed in the city to sell it, go to jail. Get caught with smoke, in violation of city, state and federal law, and get a ticket. Whatever...

Nothing right being done here. By definition he's just proving that its just about the money.

Just do away with any criminality and make it like alcohol. No fan of dopers but damn, it's equivalent to alcohol with 1000x the violence and death.

So give up the money Bloomey and friends.

I agree with decriminalizing it. I think it's the first step in the right direction, no more jail.

Bloomberg's effort is a shrewd one. He wants to seem like he's making a step towards legalization, but in reality he's just found a way to continue bringing money in while putting less out. The man may be a gun-grabbing progressive know-it-all but he's not a complete idiot.

Exactly....and I effen hate that word shrewd......it denotes, in my mind at least, someone who is pulling something over on you.

Yeah it's number 3 that gets me.
