La. Police: Boy, 8, fatally shoots 90-year-old relative after playing video game

SLAUGHTER, La. – Authorities in Louisiana said Friday that an 8-year-old boy intentionally shot and killed a 90-year-old woman who was his caregiver after watching a video game with violent themes.
East Feliciana Parish sheriff's deputies did not provide a motive. But they said the juvenile was playing the video game "Grand Theft Auto IV" — a realistic game that's been associated with encouraging violence and awards points to players for killing people — just minutes before the fatal shooting.

You could just as easily blame guns. Or, you know, the fact that this kid couldn't separate fantasy from reality.

A person who is capable of that type of thing will do it eventually, regardless of if they played a violent video game. No matter how desensitized you get to violence from seeing it on tv, or video games, or movies, or books, a normal healthy person can still tell right from wrong.

Seriously though, who lets a 8yo play that type of video game and lets them have ready access to a gun? Maybe next time just sit him down with some porn, a bottle of JD and some smokes.Rolleyes

An 8 year old shouldn't be playing GTA IV, but yeah, it's not the games fault. Hmmmmm, I wonder what other factors in the environment may have been present? Maybe some less than ideal parenting?

You wouldn't be able to run as many people over with that car if it didn't drive as far. It should only have a 10 gallon fuel tank.

That was the very first thought that entered my mind after reading the post.

Forget the video game. Easily accessible firearm with an 8 year old in the house? Seriously?

Good case of Darwinism, for sure.

Yeah, "Slaughter", La. Can't help but laugh.

I enjoy every minute of it.

What kind of absolute bullshit is this piece of shit article.

Saying he killed her because a few minutes before he played a game? Woulf we blame it on stratego had he just played it or little green army men if he had just played with them? How about chess?

Are people really so fucking stupid that they are even contemplating a correlation between him playing the game and killing his grandmother? You have to be a complete idiot if you buy this crap... Maybe grandmom was pestering him like stans grandfather and begging littld billy to kill him 24/7.. wtf..

I really cannot believe anyone has so few brain cells as to think any video game makes anyone kill, from 1 second to 200 years old... thats bullshit...

There is also one big problem with that whole concept.... since ps2 came out violence from youth has dropped in half.. but hey lets not let data make our conclusions for us...

The video games only work in Libya.

So much fail:
1. Who leaves a gun and ammo accessible to an 8 year old?
2. Who thinks a 90 year old can physically keep up with an active 8 year old, never mind consistently supervise or even control one?
3. Who thinks it's a good idea for an 8 year old to be playing a video game meant for older audiences?
4. If you don't have enough money to pay for good child care (assuming the parent was working), then you don't have enough money for expensive video games and equipment or guns and ammo.
5. IF it was a case of confusing fantasy vs reality, what parent doesn't notice this problem in an 8 year old (who should be able to tell the difference by this age)
6. IF the child has the cognitive disability listed above it is even more paramount that you have good supervision and remove fantasy games from their access; the gun issue is simply the basic rule that they should not be accessible to children - period.
