CA Union Shuts Down America's Largest Ports

California may find itself in a disastrous fiscal situation, but that won’t stop California’s newly-empowered unions from flexing their muscle. In the aftermath of the failure of Proposition 32, which would have prevented public sector unions from funding politicians, the unions are celebrating their confirmed power by striking. The latest strikes started today with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63, which shut down the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are the busiest ports in the United States.

Even though November traffic remains slow at the ports, that doesn’t mean the economic effect will be mitigated. These ports handle approximately 40% of America’s imports.

So they're striking because they got what they want?

Typical entitlement-mentality. At least there will be a 40% drop in Chinese goods entering the US for a bit.

One needs only read about Philly's port demise and the raise of Baltimore to see exactly how these unions can and do effect local economic activity. Like water seeking the path of lease resistance the goods will find their way to your Wal-Mart shelves

I kinda like the port shut-downs. That combined with shooting prices for disel puts a kink in the idea that Free Trade is actually free.

If our country cannot survive unless some crap is floating towards our shores on barges... then we are susceptible to blockades, price escalations by other consumer countries bidding higher for goods we expect to be delivered, etc. If it became a long-term problem, it would put pressure to produce more locally and also to our closest neighbors (CanMex) who are easily accessible to us.

I don't disagree with what you say but it does'nt change the fact that to strike AFTER winning is fucking retarded. It's like the little kid who throws a temper tantrum after is mother buys him a new toy.

West coast longshoremen have done an organized strike before... was it 2002 or 2003 when the last major strike hit the west coast? I remember the news outlets worrying about whether toy store shelves would be bare for Christmas.

That's when I also discovered how much skilled longshoremen make. It's nothing to sneeze at. They're in a strong labor force that cannot be outsourced easily (after all... outsourcing of manufacturing is what keeps them busy).

Hey now. A handful of people worked really hard to get what everyone wanted. Why shouldn't everyone take a vacation?

Angry I, for one, am getting tired of all you union-bashers who have no idea how hard it is to put food on your family's table in the age when the Wall Street fat cats do everything in their power to screw over the little guy and...

Oh crap, I can't keep typing this nonsense. None of you were buying it anyway. Effing unions make me sick.
