Camden's RoboCops
More elements of Orwell's 1984 becoming reality. If you remember in the book, Winston Smith is concerned about concealed microphones in public picking up his voice and being recognized.

Camden, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

New Jersey's most impoverished city is trying to use modern crime fighting techniques to clean up its streets.

Camden's Chief Thomson took Ronica Cleary to the Sky Patrol, a booth that raises three stories into the air, where police use infrared technology to patrol the city from 40-feet in the sky.

The booths cost $135,000 apiece.

The Real Time Tactical Operation Intelligence Center helps a reduced police force by providing virtual patrols using 120 cameras throughout the city.

Each camera gives a view of a city street to monitor activity.

The city has also started to use microphones called shot spotters to detect gunshots. One third of the city is covered by the microphones.

What a waste of money, and what a giant target.
