Carrying NFA Items
#1
Quick question: if I have an NFA item, like a suppressor, would I need to carry some sort of proof that I own it legally? Let's say I run a red light, or have to go through a DUI checkpoint, or I'm pulled over for DWB (Driving While Brown), or any number of reasons, and the officer sees a handgun with a suppressor on it, am I covred by my LTCF, or would I have to show some kind of paperwork to show I legally own a suppressor?

I know the situations I described are a bit silly, just as it's silly to drive around with a suppressed handgun. I'm just throwing out hypotheticals here. I do have plans to buy a suppressor at some point, but I don't see myself carrying it around very often, unless Blue Helmets put boots on the ground in PA.

Just carry a copy of your NFA paperwork in your wallet. Cover your ass that way.

In an ideal world it wouldn't get seized unless the cop had suspicion based on facts that you owned it illegally. We don't live in an ideal world; we live in one where police seize lawful firearms, even obviously lawful ones, for 'officer safety' and don't return them without a court order. You can legally carry it without the paperwork on hand, as far as i know, but we all know a seizure can occur whether or not you have that with you.

Technically only ATF agents can request to see the paperwork on the NFA item but that's not going to stop a local cop from being a dick. Having a copy of the Form 4 and stamp with you is just insurance for most instances. Of course you (especially you Jah) will always run into some asshole with a badge who wants to hassle you.

Make sure that is a COPY you have with your NFA items. The original should be in a bank safety deposit box or other secure and fire-protected location. Obvious, I know, but worth reminding.

I seriously would not do this. Cops can't wrap their head around open carry being legal, and you're going to throw an NFA item into the mix?

Well, I suppose someone needs to be the test case....

Since most police officers are so knowledgeable about gun laws you should carry everything you have about its legality. And the number of a good lawyer.

I asked a guy from my last job about carrying NFA items and he said as long as you've got a copy of your forms and tax stamp, it takes a serious dick of a cop to hassle you. He's been dealing with NFA stuff for near 30 years. I trust what he says on the matter.

^ This.

There is a huge disconnect between what is legal and what cops will try to get away with.

Also, even though it is perfectly legal to carry NFA items - and use them for self defense - how will that look to a jury? Seriously.

Most self-defense shootings are hard/expensive enough to successfully defend as is. Now add suppressors/fully automatic items to the mix, and good luck convincing 12 people that you did not have any premeditation to shoot someone. Remember - "we" just elected Obama to a second term. Do you really trust the jury to follow logical, rational thought processes?
