It depends. What kind of compass are you looking for?

Do you want something to help you keep your bearings, or something to actually put down and navigate?

I have a milsurp in my bag. It works good for what I use it for.

Where you're going to keep it is less important than what you expect to use it for when the time comes.

So again, other than "having" it, what do you expect it to do for you?

The problem is, that navigating with a compass, isn't just as easy as looking to see what way is north.

With a map, and knowing how to use it, a good compass is invaluable.

Are you looking for one to use for actual navigation?

Not to mention that when the polar shift happens soon, they'll be completely useless.

I have an old milsurp my stepdad brought home after retiring from the USAF. I've never learned how to use one to navigate properly but from what I have seen, it is easy enough to understand but I don't know how well I'd do actually trying it.
