Converting a Gasoline Generator to Tri-Fuel
#11

I was talking to a friend of mine who works as an HVAC guy and he told me that a 20# bottle would not work on a generator, because it would freeze up the regulator from the large volume of fuel that flows. He said I would need a 100# bottle to make it work. Have you used a 20# bottle for a long time period? I would not want to find out in an emergency that the 20's would not work.

Is 5 hours a long time? Last year when we got that ice storm in late October, a couple days after that we lost power and I had it running then. Didn't have a single problem. I do have 3 100# bottles on hand though for my generator, but I haven't used them yet, only the 20#.

Maybe he doesn't know about the special adapter that you linked to. If you say it works, then I believe you. If it doesn't, I would just get a larger bottle.

I'm going to order the parts and git-er-done! Big Grin
My guidance counselor said I wouldn't amount to anything... Lucky guess! Dodgy

From what I read. The earlier model Propane Genny's did have a cold issue. But they have figured out how to fix that and now there is no problem with using a smaller tank if you want too.

My guess is it's running 60RPM to fast, the frequency of the output is based on the generators RPM and would need to be a multiple of 60Hz (1800RPM but that is a factor of the windings in the generator) to be correct for the North American continent.

The engine speed shouldn't change with the load, the governor should hold it at the proper RPM.

I do have a Kill-O-Watt that I can plug into it. I believe that shows frequency. I'll fire it up and see what it's running at.

Total for everything about $250 w/ shipping. I hadn't originally ordered the 12' fuel line, but got it later after I couldn't be sure I could find one locally that would work. So that was probably a little more expensive than if I had found one local. Total install time was 45 minutes to an hour.

Now, if I would decide down the line, do they make a kit to convert a Propane Powered Genny to tri-fuel or is this just for Gas Genny's?

This is just for a gas to convert to use LP and NG as well as gas. I don't know if they make one to convert a straight LP/NG to use gas. It would probably involve adding a different carb.

For years I ran propane powered floor equipment.I used 20# bottles on all but the little edger. On my 27
' floor buffer that had a 17hp kawy twin on it, I could get about 21 hours on a 20# tank running at 2400rpm. The sidewinder only had a single cylinder 12hp kohler and could get about 30 hours of use running it at 1650 rpm. The edger used 1# cylinder and last 2 hours.
There is no reason that you cannot run a generator on a 20# bottle. Also use synthetic oil and you will extend the time between changes. Propane burns clean and i used to get about 3 years use out of a spark plug.
