Cop's gun fires twice inside New York mall's bathroom

Now I know what they mean by automatic handgun.

WALLKILL, N.Y. – Authorities say a police officer's personal handgun discharged twice when someone tried to steal his jacket while he was in the bathroom at an upstate New York shopping mall.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports that Lt. Paul Pratti of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office had hung his jacket on a stall door in a restroom at the Galleria in Wallkill in neighboring Orange County last Saturday night.

Officials say someone reached over the door and tried to grab his jacket, with the gun inside. Police say the gun fired twice, with both bullets hitting the ceiling. No one was injured.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how it discharged twice and both shots went into the ceiling. The only thing I can think of is if he had the firearm hanging on the coat hook by the trigger guard on the stall door with the coat hanging over it. Someone tried to grab the jacket, raised the firearm up on the hook and depressed the trigger.

Isn't that how everybody hangs their coats up?

This is bizarre.

From my D&D days, I DISBELIEVE!

Story states
Quote:police officer's personal handgun
Does this mean it was in addition to his duty weapon?

I do not know how he was carrying said weapon BUT when I am using a typical belt holster, my weapon either stays in the holster OR it can be placed down in the pant opening by the shoes. Can be easily hidden there.

WHY would you allow your weapon to be in the position that his supposedly was?

IF it was in a pocket in the coat, this AD would not have occurred. Streaker69's theory sounds extremely plausible.

Wanna guess that a cop was fiddling with his gun while sitting on the pot?

Either that, or some serious amount of dumb luck had to be going on during the coat theft to make the gun fire TWICE.

So is this how thieves steal jackets now? Just assume that there is a jacket hanging on the other side of a restroom door while someone is dropping a duce?

Story seems a little far fetched to me.

Remember, if it fires more than twice, it is playing with yourself.

Ummmm I want to say the cop shot into the ceiling twice to scare off the thief and then claimed it "went off". I can hardly see one accidental discharge, let alone a second one? Ehhhh. Not buying it.
