Corbett on Gun Bans
#1

Quote:Asked if he has publicly changed his mind like Sen. Bob Casey on the topic of banning semi-automatic firearms, Governor Tom Corbett spoke out and made clear that his position is that mental illness is the underlying common issue in many mass attacks.

"He made clear that he does not support state action on banning semi-automatic rifles, but acknowledges that the main debate will be at the federal level. He says flat out that banning guns won’t make people safer."

That's good news.

What we are now seeing is politicians are starting to back peddle about gun control, there's a reason the libs want to rush something through. Once some time passes common sense starts kicking in. I have seen reports of a number of dems that jumped on this are backing off.

Precisely. Emotions are wearing off and logic is setting in, that's why the dems are "demanding" a vote "now."

Corbett also knows he is only in his first term and really wants to get re-elected to a 2nd term. MOST people in the southeastern part of the state hate him (as with most republicans), but I guess he figures any pro-gun control statement would piss off the rest of PA. If Mitt Romney got elected President, then I think he would not support any gun control measures either because he would like to see a second term too.

The only thing I don't like about what he said is at the very end of the video, literally the last 20 seconds. He is asked if he thinks an assault weapon ban would make Pennsylvanian's safer. His response is that the ban won't make it safer....because they are already on the street, leaving an open window suggesting that removing the existing ones would make things safer, though earlier in the video he says that is simply not possible.

We are being heard. I think many politicians thought the outcry for a ban would be almost unanimous. They're understanding that we will no longer compromise on the 2A and we are telling them. If nothing else, they know that gun owners are not a group you want to scorn. Romney being the latest example, he didn't get the support he needed from gun owners.

They're seeing that mental health and security in schools poll much higher than gun control. They haven't forgotten 1994. It's all well and good for Feinstein and Schumer to be vocal, they're safe. A lot of others are only a few point swing from the unemployment line.

Checked my usual local news place "PhillyBurbs" and the headline there said "Corbett ducks question on assault weapons ban".

I can tell the writers on that page are quite liberal!

A scary clip:

Quote:Sen. Daylin Leach, D-17, told Calkins Media Monday that he wants to limit gun purchases to one per month and to force mandatory reporting of lost or stolen firearms. Sen. Larry Farnese, D-1, later said he would propose “common-sense legislation” that would ban assault weapons and magazines that hold a lot of bullets.

But later in the article it seems that Corbett wants people to just chill and think things through, and focus on mental health for now.

Glad he's reacting in this way.

Waiting for the usual assclowns to show up.

"That effing Governor Corbett is going to take all of our guns away!"

Seriously, why would anyone with talent or qualifications want to go into politics anymore? Despite the gun rights he's protected (inalienable ones), Corbett's probably bound to lose re-election to some Philadelphia-based gun-snatcher, and the usual pro-union types will be blaming him for years afterwards.

Atlas, everyone! Atlas is shrugging!
