Cutting an AK Barrel shorter
#1
I was reading an article on a guy turning his AK into what he called a PDW (personal defense weapon). A short barreled AK or SBR. He said that they cut teh barrel down themselves.

I was just wondering if what would all be involved in doing something like this? Can you just hack off the barrel with a hacksaw?

Not that I'm going to do this. But it made me wonder, just how hard this would be to do. If the SHTF and I wanted a short barreled rifle, can I do this on my own, or would this be something that needs down by a gunsmith?

You can probably do it yourself but you would need a gs to re crown it.

OK, why do I need to re crown it? What purpose does that serve?

Accuracy. And looks... Don't forget it needs to be threaded in able to install muzzle brake.

OK, what is a GS? Where would I get one.

Would you thread it just like you would anything you want to put threads on, or, are there special tools for threading a barrel?

gs (gun smith) As for threading, thats something i wouldnt do because im not a machinist. You would have it threaded to accept the standard ak muzzle brake.

Cut the barrel on your AK short, you lose your front sight. Unless you go with a gas block with the front sight on it, you're basically screwed.
