Democratic Speechwriter: “Please Take Away My Second Amendment Right”

Quote:Democratic Speechwriter: “Please Take Away My Second Amendment Right” Because Government Needs To Protect Me From Myself

Speechwriter Wendy Button has written for Democratic Senators John Edwards, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and John Kerry, and for Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

She has written a story for the NY Times detailing why she considered buying a gun and why she ended up not getting it. Several years ago, she suffered a home invasion. She debated buying a gun. But then, she remembered she suffered from depression, and decided she could be a danger to herself.

The other day, the president and the vice president announced their plans to curb gun violence in the wake of the shooting in Newtown, Conn. I agree with all of their measures.

But I believe they should be bolder and stop walking on eggshells about what to do with people like me and those not even close to being like me but still labeled with the crazy term “mentally ill.” The executive actions the president signed to increase access and treatment are all good, although the experts will struggle with confidentiality and privacy issues.

But since most people like me are more likely to harm ourselves than to turn into mass-murdering monsters, our leaders should do more to keep us safe from ourselves.

Please take away my Second Amendment right. Do more to help us protect ourselves because what’s most likely to wake me in the early hours isn’t a man’s body slamming at my door but depression, that raven, tapping, rapping, banging for relief.

I have a better chance of surviving if I never have the option of being able to pull the trigger.

And what's to stop her from throwing herself off of a 10 story building? If only one Liberal could be saved!

That still does not justify denying my 2nd amendment rights. I am not suffering from any form of mental illness at present, but I am certain the definition will conveniently change to include those of us who do not fall into line with .gov thinking.

Or driving into a bridge abutment. Rolleyes She clearly needs to surrender her driver's license.
I don't suffer from insanity.
I enjoy every minute of it.

I started reading the comments assuming that most of them would be sharply opposed to her idiotic essay, but boy was I wrong. Those comments are truly scary and give insight to why New York is what it has become. The liberal mind is amazing: "I can't do anything right so I'll rely on nameless, faceless bureaucrats to do everything for me".

When the days start to get shorter, the nights longer and winter rolls on in, I tend to get bouts of depression. While in college a Psychologist told me that she believed it was Seasonal Affective Disorder. Depression is real but there is not a single time that I thought about harming myself with my guns; never wanted to blow my brains out. That speech writer can go fuck herself, as far as I am concerned, I am no danger to myself. I know when I am getting depressed, and I take the actions necessary to combat it (take on some extra responsibilities, make a point to get outside during the day, recognize how I am feeling and move past it etc etc).

This author is an ass for suggesting that people that suffer bouts of depression etc should be disarmed by the government.

Seem to me she took her own 2A rights away as best as any free person can.

The biggest problem I see with tightening the mental health requirements is where do you draw the line?

Someone going to a counselor/psychologist? Ok, so you are stressed from going through several major life changes at once. No guns for you, you are under the care of a mental health professional.

Currently taking psycho-active drugs? Then what about someone prescribed anti-anxiety medication because they were in a severe car accident and certain situations make then nervous? Now they loose their guns.

Were you ever prescribed psycho-active drugs? No guns for you... even though you suffered with depression 30 years ago when you wife up and left with no warning. Doesn't matter that the causes of the depression have long been addressed.

Do/did you have a mental health diagnosis? No guns for you... even though you are afraid of dogs because you were attacked by one when you were a child.

Not everyone taking/who was taking psycho-active drugs, seeing a mental health professional, or with a mental health diagnosis is a danger to anyone.

When we still live in a world where the Secretary of the Treasury is a tax evader, where does the government have the right to point the finger at anyone and decide what they can do or not do?

It does not get much more pathetic than this.

Deny everyone the unalienable natural right to protect themselves because I might want to commit suicide someday, only know one way to do it, and the taxpayers have a duty to make sure government is big enough to stop me.

She is a zealot who is likely to kill herself with a gun in order to further the agenda!
