Democrats Demand Reinstatement of The Draft

I really don't see how the sort of mandatory service he's proposing will effect that change, since there are so many non-military options.

Besides that, historically wealthy young men from influential families of draft age have found ways around the draft, or ways to serve that were at best a slight inconvenience.

It was that way when the first draft happened during the Civil War, and it was that way when the last one expired after Viet Nam. (Which is pretty much the era Charlie Rangel's brain is still stuck in anyway.)

That would infer that ole Charlie could actually think for himself and I have serious doubts about that. I'm still trying to figure out how he is still in Congress considering that he's been bereft of tenure on all committees since he was found to have abused the tax laws for his own benefit. Why he wasn't prosecuted is beyond me, btw.

So the next step after this is, if you don't serve the federal government, you may not exercise other rights? I realize that hasn't been stated in this bill, but that would be the next step. Always gotta look at the end game.

I really wish our government would stop taking leadership cues from fiction.

Does this 'splain it?

The 13th district comprises Upper Manhattan and a small portion of the western Bronx. The district includes the neighborhoods of Harlem, Inwood, Marble Hill, Spanish Harlem, Washington Heights, Morningside Heights and portions of the Upper West Side. The Apollo Theater, Columbia University, and Grant's Tomb are located within this district.

From 2003-2013 It included all of Staten Island and the neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, and Gravesend in Brooklyn.

Put simply, his constituents love him. He's a local hero.

He's no dummy. He thinks for himself. And of himself. Only.

I have to chuckle, because I remember the days when conservatives were all for the draft, hollering "America: Love it or Leave It" and calling them traitors while kids burned their draft cards, encouraged to do so by liberals.

I have never agreed with the draft. Military service should voluntary.

...which brings us back to Rangel's older premise, which is "who will do our fighting for us." Assuming that "Uncle Sam" has a tendency to "get himself in a helluva jam" from time to time, the all-volunteer army tends to be made up of the less privileged classes, those without the resources to make their way in the world in other ways. At least that's Rangel's premise.

That premise may not be quite so true any more (assuming it ever was). Whether it's due to the economy pushing more middle-class white kids into the service or due to the fact that we're now far enough out from the whole Vietnam debacle that the idea of military service has finally been redeemed from that low point, it seems like the representation of the demographics of society in general in the makeup of the military is much more similar these days.

Kind of like a person would say forced sterilization would be good for welfare recipients, but it doesn't mean you agree with it. Wink

Okay. Have you ever served?

No. My husband has. And I think a lot of kids just roaming the streets or not getting on with their life, living off the system (like a nephew I have, in particular) ideally should be in the military...boot camp, and then onto serving. We've tried to talk my nephew into joining but he won't...he'd rather stay on food stamps and work a part time job. My husband got good job skills training during his time in the service.

However like I said, forced is not the way to go. I just wish more would enlist.

In fact, with Iraq and Afghanistan winding down, not everybody who is qualified and willing will be taken into the service.

If it's as it was before 9/11, you can expect some "involuntary separations" particularly of officers who are surplus to requirement, not making the promotions list to a higher grade, or both. IIRC, a whole batch of bird colonels were forcibly retired back then, some short of a full pension.

The more likely scenario is that the big O will get us involved somewhere but only after cuts have been made to personnel and equipment.

Some European countries still draft with the opportunity to go pro after the 16month draft time.

the chances a foreign nation enters a conflict compared to the United States is incredibly low, no?
