What happened to your bolt hold-open lever?

There should be a little lever on the front side of the trigger guard. If you hold that in while cycling the bolt it will keep it open. To close, pull back on the bolt, press and release the lever, then let the bolt slide forward.

She shot about 500 rounds through it and it never locked back.

That requires either modifying the bolt release or an aftermarket replacement like this.

That doesn't lock it back on an empty mag. It just makes the bolt release if you pull it back when locked open so you don't have to look like an idiot trying to get it to release.

The few hold-open-on-empty mods out there all have down sides not the least of which is they involve modifying the magazines. Don't worry too much though--- dry-fire is safe on a 10/22 as the firing pin doesn't strike the breech face.

Probably the best site for the 10/22 fan is http://www.rimfirecentral.com Great group of enthusiasts who'll go way out of their way to help anyone.

BTW, I'm still shooting the 1969-model 10/22 carbine that was my first gun, and the first gun I ever shot. It looks bone-stock from the outside, but has a Brimstone trigger job along with a Kidd buffer, guide-rod, and recoil-spring.

Oh, if you have Brimstone to your trigger job, even on the sub-$40 edition they fix your bolt release so that it should come off just by pulling the bolt back. It's part of the deal.
