Pretty sure it was in the news...I remember several "scares" in the past few years regarding solar flares.

But it never happens...the government and the scientists freak out, but nothing ever happens. And hasn't, for centuries. I think we'll be okay. ;-) Might be going through WWIII pretty soon, or some kind of ebola pandemic brought on by air travel or terrorists....but I don't think we have to worry about worldwide natural disasters coming from climate or the sun.

I wouldn't say centuries: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm_of_1859

Please read though that and then think about the idea that telegraph machines were activated by the induced current in the atmosphere, something that normally wouldn't happen. Now consider what would happen if that same amount of current from 1859 were to be induced into our current electrical grid. Consider that our grid is comprised of a combination of step up/step down transformers that both increase and decrease the transmitted voltage. Now you suddenly have much more energy being induced into the grid than it was prepared for. You'll have those transformer cores melting down. The really big transformers we really don't have spares for the number that are in use. If it's a bad enough event, we may not recover for years because we (as a people) wouldn't have the ability to just tool up and make more quickly because we wouldn't have the power to do it.

Absolutely right Streaker. It really is pretty concerning when you think about it. Anyone who has read "On Second After" realizes how difficult it would be to get things back to normal.

Huh. Interesting.

The worst part wouldn't be the power being lost....it would be the thugs of the modern entitlement mentality.

How about all that food that's reliant upon cold storage that's going to go bad shortly after the fuel runs out to power the back up generators if the storage places have them? How about all those gas pumps that won't be working because there's no power to run them?

It's going to be a bit more than an inconvenience.

I think this best explains the results of a massive CME.
