Elk County Sheriff Office Shutdown and LTCF Issuance
#1
Does anyone here have any insight as to what's going on with the Elk county sheriff and the board of commissioners?
The only info I've seen is what's been available in the online version of the Ridgway Record and to say the details are sketchy at best would be an understatement.
How could the board of commissioners try to shut down the sheriff's department?
Who would handle the duties while it's shut down?
Would LTCF applications and renewals be put on hold or farmed out to neighboring counties?

I knew Jeff about 35? years ago when he was a rookie with the Ridgway police dept.
He was a good guy then and I haven't heard anything bad about him in the mean time so I'm thinking he's still a good guy. As far as my dad is concerned Jeff is still a really good guy. He didn't take his job because he was a bully or on a power trip or anything, it's just what he wanted to do.

I moved out of town in 1978 and pretty much lost touch with what's going on there and just happened upon this in the past few days and it just seems really odd to me.
To his credit,
Quote:sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg said Sunday night that he, along with chief deputy Theresa Merritt, will be working "until all this is settled."
Is there anyone local who could fill me in on the missing details?
I'd like to hear what's really going on there.
My dad lives in Ridgway, I just talked to him and he said he hasn't been able to find out what's going on. It's either that people don't know or those who do know aren't talking.
It seems as though it's a short term situation but it still strikes me as odd.

Are there any Elk County residents on the board?

If anyone isn't aware the Elk County sheriff's department is under a shut-down order from the board of commissioners. Myself and others are trying to figure out what is happening to current LTCF applications that are in-processing and for those who wish to apply/renew.

If you are in Elk County and/or you've heard anything about what is happening with LTCF issuance there I'm trying to find out what's going on. I'm calling government offices in the morning trying to get answers here, but I have nothing concrete yet on what's happening. Were this local I'd be showing up to places in person, alas I haven't had a day off since Thanksgiving and I do not yet know when my next full day off will be so I can't make any trips to the county right now.

This shouldn't affect active licensees (aside from those trying to renew in Elk County).

I'll PM you after my round of phone calls later this morning whether I can get any straight answers or not, I'll update the board as well.

I asked the same question Monday morning and haven't gotten an answer yet.

I was in Ridgway last Saturday and didn't find any answers then either. My mother-in-law didn't know anything about it and my dad knew it was happening but he didn't know many details.
The last I heard about it is what was in the Ridgway Record Sunday. Sheriff Jeff Krieg stated that he and chief deputy Theresa Merritt will be working "until all this is settled."
It appears that it's all about a budget shortfall of $9,000.00 for the year and the office will be open again in January.
That being said, I would presume that sheriff Krieg will do his best to carry on his necessary duties.

ETA:
I just checked the Ridgway Record and found an update:

In response to a civil complaint filed Dec. 6 by Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg against the county's board of commissioners, Tom Wagner, county solicitor acting on behalf of the board, has filed a response regarding the issues and has introduced new matters in the case.
A hearing on Krieg's initial complaint will be held Friday, Dec. 14 at 1:30 p.m. in the main courtroom of the Elk County Courthouse.
The initial complaint alleges that the sheriff's department is "underfunded" due to an "increase in workload" and "economic circumstances," and that the board of commissioners is either "unable to or refuse to compensate" the sheriff's department which "may result in the closure" of the office. Krieg, deputies, and administrative staff were working Wednesday but it was unclear when and if they would be compensated for their time with the exception of Krieg, who is required by state constitution to be paid his salary.

Didn't another county in NE PA try to do something similar or abolish the Sheriff's Office last year?

Philadelphia tried to do a clean sweep of all of its useless row offices although some political maneuvering managed to save the Sheriff's Office from being abolished. The Sheriff here has nearly zero actual law enforcement powers.

Hmmmm Dodgy

I just got off the phone with the Board of Commissioners Office and the Sheriff's Office (two separate calls).

The Sheriff's department is working right now despite the shutdown order, how long that's continuing I don't know. I'll be calling the Chief Deputy back later today to get some more information on the situation.

It looks like there's been some sort of settlement that seems to be satisfactory to the sheriff's dept.

The most recent update according to the Ridgway Record:

A controversial lawsuit pitting the Elk County Board of Commissioners against the county sheriff's office was resolved with little fanfare Friday as following three hours of testimony both sides reached a settlement behind closed doors.
The civil suit was filed by Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg on Dec. 6 in an effort to compel the commissioners to cover the sheriff's nearly $9,000 budget deficit and retroactively pay his employees through the year's end up until the 2013 budget takes effect.
In testimony heard Friday from Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg and Chief Deputy Theresa Merritt, both detailed the extensive list of duties performed by the office and its officers while noting that the frequency with which they do so has increased dramatically in recent years and said this has contributed directly to the office's nearly $9,000 deficit.
