Quote:Emails reportedly suggest Christie's office involved in controversial lane closures

Newly published emails reportedly suggest New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's office was involved in controversial lane closures in a north Jersey town last fall, giving fresh ammunition to Democrats who claim the closures were political retribution against the local mayor.

Though he repeatedly has denied involvement, Christie has faced criticism for months over the bizarre incident in September, when lanes at the George Washington Bridge from Fort Lee, N.J., were closed for four days. He faced accusations that the lanes were blocked in retaliation over Mayor Mark Sokolich's refusal to endorse him for re-election last November.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that emails indeed show his deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, suggested closures to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey two weeks before the incident.

"Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee," she wrote to Christie confidant David Wildstein, according to the Times. At the time, Wildstein was on the Port Authority; he has since resigned.

The George Washington Bridge, which connects New Jersey and New York City, is one of the most heavily traveled commuter routes in the country, handling nearly 300,000 vehicles a day. The closures in September caused massive gridlock, leaving commuters stuck in traffic for hours.

It was the Port Authority that ordered the closures, claiming they were part of a traffic study.

Christie's office has not yet returned a request for comment from FoxNews.com regarding the Times report.

Though Christie denied involvement, Democrats have tried to use the incident to undercut his image as a bipartisan problem-solver -- amid expectations that he may run for president in 2016.

Just to add another voice....

How many times has someone annoyned you, pissed you off, or you reveled in the sour grapes and said something like "Well...it would be a real shame if XXXX got in a car accident and ruined that beautiful new car they got" or something along those lines, and then....XXXX got in a car accident?

Really, we can point to threads here about almost any politician and we'll see someone post something similar.

Certainly NOT saying that the retaliation isn't possible, but it is also possible it was something that was said as an offhand joke and then not long after the bridge legitimately and needed to be closed for something totally unrelated...

Though in this case, it definitely sounds very very fishy when the excuse is "traffic study".

It's really quite simple to determine if this was retaliation or not. He just needs to show all the documentation regarding this traffic study. When it was propose, what it's purpose was and what the result was.

Otherwise, this scandal shall be dubbed "Fat & Furious".

Well hopefully this is just one more thing to prevent the fat man from winning the presidential primary.

Fired or "promoted" to some other cushy, high paying job whether it is now or in the future?

Doesn't matter, in another year, Christie will change himself from R to D and then none of this will matter. The only reason this is news at all is because he currently lists himself as an R. D's have done worse, much worse, and there's barely a peep.

Regardless of all that, I still don't understand how traffic on the bridge would have hurt the Ft. Lee mayor Huh

Basically Ft. Lee is a bedroom community for people who work in New York. They were punishing the community.

It's exemplary of just how nasty NJ politics (and business) can be.

The motto is: "If you fuck with me, I'll fuck with you, your mother, your brother, and your neighborhood."
