EMP Threat

Okay my dad and I were debating what all would be "destroyed" by and EMP. I believe that a older Diesel pick up such as a early 90s 12v cummins would be still operable in the case of an EMP detonation. my father believes that the EMP would kill the battery in the truck. So would an EMP take out car batteries. Also what other type of simple electronics would be safe from and EMP?

Feel free to discuss any EMP related info here.

Does the truck have electronic ignition?

Batteries don't really die from EMP its the electronics. Build a faraday cage around the whole thing Smile

I agree, batteries will not fail from an EMP. I also don't believe that many electronics that are on the fringe of the burst will be affected either. The biggest worry about an EMP or CME would be the effect it has on the power grid and devices attached to it.

Not sure if the truck has an electronic ignition or not, but more then likely yes.

As for a faraday cage, I have heard of them but dont really know what one is. Are they not just a metal cage that will disperse the emp?

Yes, that's what it is, and it's completely impractical to try to protect your vehicle in such a manner, unless you have a shitton of cash that you don't need for anything else.

I think an EMP burst would be the beginning of the end. Look at what happened in NJ and NY from 8 days without power... imagine 100 days without any electronics of any type. Scary to say the least.

So what would be everyone's EMP prep?

Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.

100 days? If there were enough of a burst to disrupt the national grid, it would probably be a lot longer than that. Considering that all communications would be down, thousands of transformers would be destroyed with no immediate way to build new ones. If it really was able to destroy the electronics in vehicles, the trucking industry would be greatly hampered.

It's more likely a year or two before there would be some semblance of normal life again.

Honestly, I've always thought EMP was one of the silliest things to spend much time / effort prepping for. An EMP attack against the US would be step one followed but real Nukes landing in real back yards.
