The debt burden in the U.S. and other Western countries will continue to increase, Marc Faber, author of the Gloom, Boom and Doom report told CNBC on Monday, leading to a “colossal mess” within the next five to 10 years.

“I think the regimes will try to keep the system alive as it is for as long as possible, which means there’s no “fiscal cliff,” there’s a fiscal grand canyon,” Faber told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

Faber argued that the political systems in place in the West would allow the debt burden to continue to expand. Under such a scenario of never-ending deficits, the Western world would rack up huge deficits.

Well, at least someone agrees with me and a few others here.

Call it a libertarian bent or just traditional Constitutionalism, I don't care what label is put on it. But, there are 18 areas of responsiblity outlined in the Constitution for the Federal government. If the .gov stuck to those and went no further, the size of our government would shrink.

Let the states have the major responsibilty for governance! that's why they exist to begin with!

We must have PBS and NASA. They only take .0000001% of the budget.

Exactly! The same tired excuse to continue every program.
Which is why we're screwed.

Except that would require personal responsibility of the states and their residents. Something that has been so long forgotten that there is almost no chance of it ever happening because it would require sacrifice, which to most means ordering a whopper instead of a double Whopper with bacon and cheese.

Bingo!

But that would mean shutting down 90% of the Federal government's alphabet agencies.

Hell, if we got rid of the fed Dept of Education, our kids wouldn't learn anything. Shut down the Dept of Energy & all our lights would go out. Shut down the Dept of Agriculture & no crops would grow. Shut down the Bureau of the Office of Redundancy Office Bureau &..............Well, you get the picture.

Like children, you never learn responsibility until others stop doing it for you and you pay the consequences of not doing it Smile.. If PA said we're not going to raise taxes and take care of our bridges, when enough bridges fail, people stop driving our roads and bringing us commerce, people move to another state so that they dont have to fear bridges collapsing on them, well then they will raise taxes to repair the bridges. When people in PA don't get free cash for x,y,z they will either get a job or move to another state or stop costing us tax paying money, yeah on all parts..

But, there are competent Govenors in the states that seek the same thing we do! Well, some states anyhow. And once the responsibility and went to the states they'd find competent people to govern.

Look at Kasich in Ohio, Lindal in Louisianna and Walker in Wisconsin for examples. Would anyone mourne the loss of the Dept of Energy. Don't forget it was created around 1972 or so to develop policies and programs to rid the U.S. of its dependence on foreign oil. Dept of Education is nothing but a funnel for money from the taxpaying public to chosen states and schools. There are some Fed agncies that need to be cut and some deserve to be retained.

Everyone complains about roads and bridges needing repair or replacement, but in the case of the Interstate system, the construction was done with Federal money and state matching funds. But, the states were (are) supposed to MAINTAIN the facilities!
