FMJ -vs- JHP

Powrball? It seems to work pretty well in most calibers that i've seen gel tests for it in. I particularly like the 9mm round. 100gr @ 1475fps/485fpe should definitely ruin someone's day.

Yes Powrball. My friend carries with them. I carry in a 40 and currently carrying FMJ only because I don't have any JHP right now. But will get some soon. I was thinking about going powrball but they are expensive..

My friend also has what they call "shot shells" They are pretty much bird shot for a hand gun but very very expensive AND the BB's are very very tiny. Smaller then Bird Shot. The ammo is intended for Varmint use.

Been thinking about how it would work for close rang Self defense. Like for a last resort ankle gun. Those teeny tiny BBs would be hard to clean up Big Grin

Unless you are going to use the shot shells on something like a snake, I really don't see the point. I especially don't like the idea for self defense. Handgun rounds are not very good at stopping human threats to begin with. Now, that take force and divide it among a bunch of tiny little balls... I would rather practice and get a couple good shots off - I'd even just take one well placed shot - to a shot with shot shell on a human attacker. That's just me and my personal opinion.

Yeah, I have shot shells for a couple sidearm calibers. I think in a pinch, it'd only be effective at very close range, and only then with a shot to the attackers face. Small target, that. Better to penetrate, cause cavitation, slow or stop a threat with a well-placed shot or shots.

The 100gr+P rounds are hot enough that they make the hand sting after just a few rounds. Definitely no fun for target shooting. Wink I carry the 100gr+P round in my 2 back up magazines, for barrier penetration, xenomorph defense, etc, etc.

I went ahead and ordered 100gr+P to try out. I don't intend on target shooting it. I'm going to fire a few rounds off to make sure it feeds in the gun.

In .40 cal i'd just go with Federal HST or Winchester SXT. Buy in 50rd boxes, it will be a lot cheaper that way.

EDIT: I see you ordered a box of Powrball. Should work fine in your pistol. The round ball in the tip gives the same profile as FMJ, for maximum feeding reliability. It also prevents the hollowpoint from getting clogged from clothing or drywall, etc. The round is not great against barriers since it is an unbonded core design, but it should work great against 2 and small-medium sized 4 legged critters.

The snake shot gives penetration in the 1"-2" range. Short of shooting someone in the face and blasting their eyes out, it has no real use as a defensive loading IMO.

IMO, the top rated hollowpoints currently on the market are:

Barnes Tac XP SCHP (loaded by Buffalo Bore, Doubletap, Corbon, Federal, and others)

Speer Gold Dot bonded core JHP (loaded by Underwood ammo to maximum pressure)

Federal HST (2nd generation Hydrashok)

Winchester SXT (2nd generation Black talon)

Corbon Powrball. I really like the high velocities it's driven to in most calibers.

I'm probably forgetting a couple.

Meh, looks pretty good to me unless you get into the really boutique stuff.

Some people load based on the seasons. JHP's for lightweight clothes and FMJs in the winter for thick clothing penetration. It's all a matter of preference.
