FMJ -vs- JHP

Valorius;7216 Wrote:IMO, the top rated hollowpoints currently on the market are:

Barnes Tac XP SCHP (loaded by Buffalo Bore, Doubletap, Corbon, Federal, and others)

Speer Gold Dot bonded core JHP (loaded by Underwood ammo to maximum pressure)

Federal HST (2nd generation Hydrashok)

Winchester SXT (2nd generation Black talon)

Corbon Powrball. I really like the high velocities it's driven to in most calibers.

I'm probably forgetting a couple.

Hornadys Critical Defense/Critical Duty works pretty well. Did some ballistics gel tests on it and they expand beautifully.

Critical defense definitely does not make the list for me because it's not even tested against anything but gel and denim, and it is in ridiculously overpriced 20/25 rd packaging.

The critical duty is at least tested against various mediums, but again, overpriced packaging designed to rip off the customer.

I paid $17 a box for 25rds of Critical Defense. I paid a few dollars more for Hydrashocks. It's not the cheapest ammo in the world but there are a lot of others that cost more.

Don't ever buy the 25 rd packages, you get totally ripped off.

I can get Speer Gold Dot 115gr+P+ LE Only JHP for $25 box/50, as just one example. Always buy 50rd LE packaged ammo if you want to save a -lot- of money.

One of the local ranges by me has Federal 124gr+P HST for $29.95 for a box of $50. And that's a local gun store price.

Ultimately, it's your money though.

I too use Hornady Critical Defense. I have put a box through each one of my carry guns before carrying with it and it functioned beautifully. It's really the only thing I have been buying since I started carrying.

Maybe one day I'll switch to something cheaper, it works for me though.

I hate to harp, but why are you content to pay more for ammunition that is not even tested against nor in any way designed to defeat intermediate barriers?

Does Hornady even sell that ammo in 50rd boxes at all?

Quick price comparison from the most recent Cabelas Shooting catalog. A 25rd box of 115gr Hornady Critical Defense costs $19.99. A 20rd box of 115gr Gold Dots runs $22.99. 20rds of Federal Hydrashoks in 9mm but a 124gr (the lightest listed for the caliber) is $24.99. 20rds of Buffalo Bore 115gr +P+ runs $26.99. 20 rounds of 115gr +P Corbons, $21.99. Corbon DPX in the same load, same number of rounds $29.99.

I'm not seeing where I'm getting ripped off to be honest. The Hornady is reasonably priced, feeds reliably, is pretty accurate and expands beautifully. I'll stick with what I trust and you can go take more near pornographic pics of your female friends.

You're comparing 20rd boxes of ammo. Compare those prices to 50rd boxes of ammo, and you'd see that you're getting blatantly ripped off. Especially if you're trying to stockpile.

50rd box of Winchester 127gr+P+ SXT: $26.95 @ 54 cents a round.

50rd box of Federal 9mm 124gr+P HST: $31.00 @ 62 cents a round

50rd box of LE Only premium Speer Gold Dot 115gr+P+: $29.95 @ 60 cents a round

HST, SXT and Gold Dot are probably the top 3 Law enforcement bullet designs in use today, and all 3 are much better against intermediate barriers than Critical defense. All 3 also pack much more muzzle energy than critical defense. Those are also the very first prices i pulled up off google, so they might even be high for those particular loads. I know i can get the Speer 115gr+P+ Gold Dot load for $25 per 50.

If you want to go with an older but highly proven hollowpoint design, you can do even better.

50rd box of Federal 9BPLE 115gr+P+ Hi ShoK JHP: $16.79/50 @ 34 cents a round.

This is a round that was made famous by the Illinois State Police in the 80s and 90s, and has been used successfully hundreds of times over the years in actual gun fights. It's not a great barrier performer, but then, neither is critical defense.

You really are just getting ripped off blind when you buy 20 or 25rd packages. Do the per round cost math, it's plain as day.

Buffalo Bore is overpriced, but at least when you buy it you are getting super hot +P+ ammo that exceeds 500fpe of energy in a duty sized gun. Corbon DPX is also not comparable, because it's a solid copper bullet and copper is very expensive. But even there, it is overpriced. If you want ammo that matches the performance of Buffalo Bore and uses Gold Dot bonded bullets for dirt cheap, check out Underwood ammo. They have buffalo bore-esque ballistics for probably half the cost.

50rd box of Underwood 124gr+P+ Gold Dot: $25.93 @ 51 cents a round.

I am only trying to save you money. Smile

Add in shipping on those and it gets pretty pricey per round unless you buy by the case. I don't know about you but I'd rather have a lot more hardball for training for the same or cheaper than to have cases of carry ammo that's expensive to replace. I generally buy my ammo a couple hundred rounds at a time when Walmarts having WWB coincides with my having the money to buy it.

You go ahead and spend your money how you see fit and stop trying to convince me I bought crappy ammo because you don't like it.

I'm wondering what this stuff would do. It's a 50 grain fragmenting hollow point 9mm round. They claim it produces a 5" wound channel.

2000fps
444 ft/lbs
50 grain
+P
