Foes Try to Shrink NRA by Ending Members’ Hotel Discounts
#1
Quote:Supporters of tighter restrictions on guns are deploying a new tactic: pressing companies such as Wyndham Worldwide Corp. (WYN) and Hertz Global Holdings Inc. (HTZ) to stop giving discounts to members of the National Rifle Association.

Web-based organizations with ties to Moveon.org, an advocacy group that backed President Barack Obama’s re-election, want to shrink the NRA’s membership by eliminating an incentive to join -- cheaper hotel rooms and car rentals.

The National Rifle Association has opposed mandatory background checks for all gun purchasers and limits on large-capacity ammunition magazines.
That would diminish the gun lobby’s clout as it tries to block Congress from enacting new legislation in the aftermath of the December mass shootings at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, the advocacy groups reason.

“The NRA takes those members and translates that into power in Washington,” said Kaytee Riek, who is managing the campaign for the New York-based group SumOfUs. “The companies leaving” the discount programs “will pressure the NRA.”

You get discounts for being an NRA member?

Holy crap...I never knew that, because I DID NOT JOIN FOR DISCOUNTS.

So you're telling me that I'm not going to get bigger and better discounts with the lifetime membership I just got.

Darn........ glad that's not the reason why I did it. I mean seriously, does anyone look at the discounts and say, "that's what putting me over the top, now I'm joining"?
Everytime we look the other way when someone else loses rights we disagree with, we make it easier to lose the rights we support.

Here is a link to their contact page should anyone want to let them know how you feel. Angel

If anyone would like to use it, here is what I said;
Quote:I hate to break this to you folks, and especially Kaytee Riek, but I no of no one who has joined the NRA for the discounts. Bill - Benefactor Member of the NRA. Have a great day!

Update: As of 4:13 this afternoon, I have surprisingly not heard back from our friends at SumofUs even though they stated, when I sent my email, that they would get back to me within two hours. [sarcasm]I'm heartbroken. [/sarcasm]

Lol, I have never known anyone that joined the NRA solely for perks.
It’s the NRA not AARP.Big Grin

It’s really a wonder why we have to worry about antis at all.

I used to work for Hertz. The NRA discount only showed up once in the year I worked there and he worked for the NRA. It was a 10% discount. The exact same as the AAA, AARP or USAA discount.

I didn't even know we got discounts, so I guess you can rule that out as my reason for joining.

This tells us how a lot of the antis think, since they can't fathom backing a cause unless it gets them something. Kinda like the Obamaphone mindset, I guess.

we should convince the gun grabbers that this is far more effective than legislation.
