Gadsden Flag Prank Gets High School Senior Kicked Out of School
THIS KIDS RESPONSE IS ON THE MONEY. das

Gadsden FlagIn another story of political correctness in public education (where free speech and original thinking are frowned upon), a harmless prank at a Colorado high school got a soon-to-be-graduate in trouble.

The Examiner reported that on May 9, Greg Stonebruner replaced the school’s flag at Central High School in Grand Junction, Colorado with the “Don’t Tread On Me” flag – an expression of freedom and the willingness to fight for it. Stonebruner also attached a note to the flagpole that told the history of the Gadsden flag.

The prank didn’t go over well with Principal Jodie Diers, who was outraged when she saw the Gadsden flag flying. Other students claimed she was angry and yelling to have the flag replaced after seeing what happened.

Diers later pulled Stonebruner out of a scholarship breakfast and told him and his parents the flag was a “slap in the face” to the school and he was “not welcome” anymore at Central High. She also withheld his diploma until after the graduation ceremony.

After receiving his diploma and getting his flag back, Stonebruner had some strong words about the incident and the principal’s claim that flying the Gadsden flag was a ‘slap in the face’ to the school. He said: http://teapartyupdate.com/gadsden-flag-p...of-school/

So now we're offended by the banner flown by George Washington?

Pranks come with consequences. It's a school, not a playground.

That being said, I thought it was funny, and the penalty was too harsh. Do I think the kid should be punished? Yes, but definitely not suspended or expelled. I believe they need to deter the behavior of future pranks and shouldn't let him slide. If it was up to me, I'd make him spend a week of his summer vacation cleaning up the school. Again, this young man gives me some faith in our younger generation, but we also can't condone pranks.

Quote:The Gadsden flag has almost an identical history to the American flag, and was born from a very patriotic cause, and its suddenly a ‘slap in the face.’ This shows the ignorance and misinformation of the people in power over our children. History like this used to be taught in schools all over the United States, and now not even most adults, let along high school age people know what this flag stands for.

Administrators all over the US are excising [sic] power that they do not have over students and other adults. Students are being taught to obey the baseless authority and to never question anything. Is that the real message we want to be sending our children, who are the future of this country?

Here's one problem: it's not longer just "the banner flown by George Washington." It's been co-opted by a political movement.

Here's the other: Striking the US flag in order to display any other banner in its place is profoundly disrespectful.

The same would be true if the substituted flag had been:
  • The Rainbow Flag
  • The US Marines Banner
  • The AIM Flag
  • The Confederate Flag
  • The Flag of the State of Colorado

Some of the above flags would be suitable in concert with (and inferior to) the US flag, but in no cases in place of it in a place reserved for it.

It said school flag. Was the school flag the national flag? I don't know how profound it is regardless.

It did say he replaced THE SCHOOL FLAG not the American flag. The problem is, I think, that the Gadsden Flag is now associated with The Tea Party. If he replaced it with a rainbow flag or even the Jolly Roger I bet the penalty wouldnt have been as stiff. The penalty for this is too harsh for a simple "prank" and for Gods sake he even put the history of the flag on the flag pole. You wouldnt want people to actually learn what the Gadsden flag actually stood for would you?Angry
