Assuming you are planning on hard wiring these outlets, the easiest way would be add another breaker box, and use a receptacle box to get it through the wall....but....

If you are going to do all that it really would be easier to use a transfer switch.

I suppose you could buy 2 receptacle boxes, mount one inside and one outside to get the electric inside the house. Then get a a 220 to multiple 110 plug cord for inside the house .

I have two circuit boxes in my house. (Long story). One basically runs upstairs and the other runs the downstairs.

If I get a genny hooked up to run the house via transfer box or interlock, will I be able to tap into both boxes or just one of them?

If I go interlock, will I be able to run one line in to power both boxes?

I can see where the transfer box would let me tap into both boxes. But would rather be able to turn on an off switches that I want to use, that is why I want to go with the interlock system. But I'm thinking I may have to go with a transfer box due to having two circuit boxes.

I will be doing this in two houses that are really close together. Time an money always control what I do. Correct me if I am wrong but the teansfer switch is install with the power off. This also means inspector and additional cost.

For availability, check Grainger.com They have the items in stock and ready to ship as far as I can tell.

Also Amazon has a good stock. This looks like a very good deal if it will be adequate to your needs.

Ok. for some reason I thought the power to the house had to be cut.

In an auto transfer switch, it detects when there is power restored to the main and disconnects the generator from the line. In a manual switch you should always throw your main breaker before you fire up you generator, and only turn it back on AFTER you disconnect your generator.

And throw that main breaker before you start to install the transfer switch Wink

If you forget, one eye lights up like a neon light for 120 and two for 240 volts.

Correct, but again people need to realize that's on an auto switch.

With ours the generator starts after the switch detects the power is out (it waits approximately 5 seconds) then once the generator is up to RPM you hear an audible 'pop' from inside the transfer switch and the house is on generator.

Likewise when the power comes back on it waits a few seconds (to make sure it stays on) and then 'flips' the switch back to the panel and then the generator shuts off.

Funny thing too, our transfer switch is in the basement so you can't hear the switch change ... only way we realized the power was back on was we walked into the kitchen and realized the generator wasn't running.

Is this basically a interlock set up? With only one switch, that is what it looks like. Still a bit cheaper than installing a transfer box. But then, they call it a transfer box. Shrug
