Girl, brain dead after tonsil surgery
#1
Quote:OAKLAND, Calif. — A 13-year-old Oakland girl will be removed from life support on Tuesday because she's been declared brain dead after she suffered complications following a routine tonsil-removal procedure, her uncle said Monday.

Jahi McMath, an eighth-grade student at the E.C. Reems Academy of Technology and Arts in Oakland, was declared brain dead last Thursday after she went into cardiac arrest while recovering from having her tonsils removed at Children's Hospital Oakland days before.

Under state law, brain death must be determined by two different doctors doing two different sets of tests at least 3 hours apart.

In a meeting with McMath’s family Monday, the head of the hospital’s pediatrics department said that because she had been declared dead under state law, McMath would be pulled from life support.

“We didn't want her to be removed from life support but the decision is out of our hands because it's been declared a legal death,” said Omari Sealey, 27, McMath’s uncle.

The original article I read that did not include a photo of the victim said that she was having her tonsils out because the doctors thought that would help with her sleep apnea. One of the primary causes of sleep apnea is being overweight. I think it's interesting that the chosen course of treatment was surgery and not a plan to reduce her weight.

When I was speaking with the doctor about my apnea I asked them about surgery. They made it very clear that surgery really isn't the answer, and many times it doesn't work to solve the problem 100%. In some cases the apnea can return after the surgery.

All that said, something seriously went wrong with the surgery that she probably shouldn't have had to begin with. I'm sure the hospital is going to be paying a huge settlement for this. Not sure how I feel about the decision for life support. If there's absolutely no higher brain function then there's really no reason to keep her shell of a body alive. Sometimes you really need to take a pragmatic approach to things, something the family isn't doing.

I read this earlier and felt it was a non-news item, other than I'm sorry for the family's loss.

Streaker...they do say the older you are, the more dangerous a tonsil removal is. I kind of want mine out but the doc highly discouraged it.

I'm not trying to be mean, but if my loved one was ever, god forbid, brain dead, I'd want to pull the plug anyways. I'm pretty sure all of my loved ones would want that. I know I would want that to happen to me.

Ehhhhhh, I don't even like talking about this stuff. Sad

It's not being mean, it's being reasonable. If a person is in coma and they have higher brain function, then they should be maintained because there is a a chance of them coming out of coma. It's happened in many instances in history. If a person as no brain function, there's nothing that can be done, they're not coming back and their body is nothing but an empty shell.

I think at least three of the little girls from the Amish school house shooting were taken off of life support. I feel it was the right thing to do.

Tough for the family, but their child was already gone. There are no risk free surgeries. I almost died from a sinus surgery (deviated septum), and that was supposed to be an easy thing according to the surgeon.

If I'm ever on life support, I want them to pull the plug, then plug me back in and reboot to see if that fixes me.

Can someone show me where "Death Panel says DIE" is? Or is it just another misleading thread title?
