Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is expected to call for auctioning off wine and liquor store licenses and opening beer and wine sales to a broad array of retailers, from big-box stores to drugstores.
Corbett's office said the Republican governor will announce his plan Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
According to information from people briefed by the governor's office, the plan involves shutting down the more than 600 state-owned wine and liquor stores as a prelude to auctioning 1,200 wine and liquor store licenses.
Here is an updated article on this story that I just found: http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/breaking...ed_li.html
Corbett: Replace state-owned liquor stores with retail outlets for $1 billion in revenue
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett today unveiled an ambitious proposal to get the state out of the liquor and wine business by replacing hundreds of state-owned stores with twice as many private outlets and allowing beer and wine to be sold at a wide range of stores.
“I want Pennsylvanians to enjoy the same convenience that virtually every other American today has,” said Corbett, who unveiled his proposal at a news conference halfway across the state from the Capitol, where its fate will be decided.

Well it's about fucking time! They are privatizing liquor stores now not shutting them down per say. This is one thing that baffled me since the day I moved back to Pennsylvania. Why the hell should I have to go to two different stores to get my new years eve supplies? Maybe we can finally buy beer at the local sheetz like the rest of the civilized world lol! West Virginia you can walk out of sheets with a 24oz can and a pack of Marlboro's for a five dollar bill. Granted I don't smoke anymore and rarely drink but come on Pennsylvania!

Interesting. Shut them down then auction off the licenses. So no booze between, get ready for some panic buying.

Yea, OK, I didn't buy them with my own hands not too long ago. Never paid 18 dollars for a 30 pack at a 7-11 in maryland either
Also, didn't read anywhere that said the state is giving up their revenue from liquor licenses. In fact it is the opposite, this will create MORE liquor licenses and MORE revenue. Am in missing something?

When you have a monopoly its easy to steal cash. About time we stop this nonsense. Also time to lighten up on licences for bars and restaurants. Pa has awful selections when it comes to places to enjoy a beverage

No, it's not. But it's not legal to buy out of state and bring it back either.

Am in missing something? thats the problem, your talking beer, dont really give a shit about beer. half gallon of jack daniels has about a 3 dollar price difference in the surrounding states. I cannot drive to one of those states for 3 dollars.

No, it's not. But it's not legal to buy out of state and bring it back either. it is if you pay the tax on it. you can order wine and have it shipped to you. pay the tax and its legal
