I tried out a test the other day of soaking cotton balls in bacon grease to see how they'd do up against cotton balls in Vasoline. Sadly, bacon grease cotton balls have a much higher kindling point than vasoline. So bacon flavored fire starters are out.

I've been using my little backpacking wood stove several times now to cook my lunch out in the backyard. (talked about in the backpacking thread)

It is really easy to get that thing going. When I'm done with cooking I poor the remaining embers from the stove onto some heavy-duty aluminum foil, fold it over and snuff them out that way. Add a handful of wood shavings to that and I have a mix of wood shavings and small pieces of charcoal - A foolproof fire starter for next time.

I don't think I will carry a phone book in my backpack any time soon.
