Handgun ownership in VA?
#11
I just moved to Arlington, VA a couple of months ago. Have not done any OC'ing in case I missed some small minute detail when looking over the laws that could land my ass in hot water.

A few questions: Is it like PA where a license is not required if you are open carrying on foot? How about in a vehicle? (I have a PA LTCF, I just don't want to show it if I am not legally required to by law).

I also understand that I cannot conceal carry while consuming alcohol. I am also under the impression that although I cannot conceal carry, I can open carry since the law only specifically mentions concealed carry. My question: the statutes are sort of muddy when it comes to conceal carrying in an establishment that serves alcohol. From what I read, it seems to be OK to conceal carry in the restaurant area but a no go if I am sitting at the bar, even if I'm drinking a water. Is this correct?

Open carry is perfectly fine in VA. You may carry in your car without a VA CHP however, you must have the firearm in full view. If you're a VA CHP holder, there is NO duty to inform. In VA, if a law enforcement asks for ID or a CHP (LTCF) you MUST comply. I don't believe that the issue is different when holding a valid license from another state.

I don't drink alcohol, so the alcohol/carry issue doesn't effect me though, you may conceal carry in a bar or a restaurant. The law has changed on that one. However, being that they are private establishments they get to make the decision.

Do some more research. The information is out there. Wink

You can cc or OC in a place that serves BUT you can't drink when CCing. Shrug goofy but true. I was in Va Beach for 18 years I had one Home Depot greeter do a double take but thats it.

Yes VA courts and gov do not have lockers as a rule. They may out of niceness.
Plus side you can CC on school grounds as long as you stay in your car ie picking up your kid.
