Hawaii sets aside $100,000 to offer its 17,000 homeless people one-way airfare back to their home states

Hawaii is hoping to take the burden off its welfare system by saying aloha to its 17,000 homeless residents.

The state will offer one-way tickets home to any eligible homeless person to anywhere in the continental United States.

Hawaii has allotted $100,000 for a three year trial run of the so-called 'return-to-home' program, which could also even offer participants beds on cruise ships bound for their homes.

"Overburdened shelter system?" How about let private charities take care of it...no more burden!

It can't be very large percentage of the homeless that are from other states considering the expense and logistics of getting there.

I don't know. If you think about it, and you are homeless in a cold state and you could get your hands on a final $750 or so...wouldn't you fly to Hawaii???? The weather there is awesome....

I don't know the stats, though, on how many are homeless residents and how many are transferred homeless. Evidently, though, they must have enough transfers to want to ship them back out.

I think they've been complaining about the homeless for awhile, though, as it makes their tourism look a little worse. They don't have any billboards on Oahu for the sake of preserving the beauty. So maybe they don't want any homeless, either.

Let's send them NYC or San Francisco. Homeless people and hipsters look a lot alike.

no they didnt ask for it, in 2004 california loaded homeless people on a one way free trip to honolulu. i know because my sister was one of the nurses that had to deal with them when they expected free health care that was promised to them. no wonder the island people hate people from the mainland
