Help Me Set Up My 500 For Big Game
#1
Ok, so I have always used a rifle for hunting deer but never thought about using a shotgun. Assuming my interpretation of the regulations are correct I can use slugs during the regular firearms seasons here in 4D for both deer and bear. I have a plain Mossberg 500 Persuader/Cruiser with an 18.5" barrel and 6 shot capacity without the plug.

My question is this. Where should I go from here?

Mount a rail on the top using the pre-drilled and tapped holes and put some kind of optic on it? What optic? Scope? Red dot? What options are going to hold up to the intense recoil from a 12GA slug?

Keep the cylinder bore 18.5" barrel and use rifled 3" slugs? Get a rifled barrel and shoot sabots? What length barrel?

What kind of accuracy can I expect to get from a particular setup? What are my options? What can I expect to spend?

What say y'all?

There are scopes made for shotguns from many manufactures.
Not that I would buy directly from here but it shows a good selection to start looking at.

Get a longer barrel.
You will be best served with a rifled barrel shooting sabots.
Although a 28" smooth will do the job with rifled slugs
You will need a mag plug.
A stock. Houge is a good one on the cheap. Possibly a cheek riser.

For the price of everything you might honestly be best served by buying a dedicated slug gun.
H&R single shot is a good start.

Already with an optic for a few bucks more.

My 500 already has a stock installed. Also I couldn't find a regulation that requires me to plug the tube for big game hunting, only for game birds.

What if I went with something like this.

This would be a little cheaper than buying a separate dedicated gun for big game and could be swapped out. Is 24" a good barrel length? Should I try to find a longer barrel?

24" is standard for a rifled barrel.
The plug is like $4 so that's moot for the most part. I'm not sure of the regulations.
Cabelas also sells the barrel with a scope but they are out of stock.

It will definitely work though.

I know for myself I'm always looking for any excuse to buy another gun though too.

For the price of the barrel & scope combo you could just buy a slug gun though.
$250 from Walmart for what you linked vs a whole new dedicated gun with sling for $243 plus $6(shipping) and transfer.

Either way will kill bear and deer dead. Lol

Yea i hear ya on the new gun part.

I still have the old plug that was in it too, its just a wooden dowel rod with two rubber rings slipped on each end.

I kinda like that barrel combo and I've used that same scope before and liked it. Could I expect to realistically get a vitals shot up to 100 yards with that setup do you think?

With a proper sabot I would think so. Find what brand shoots best first.
Only downside is the price of sabots vs slugs.

I have a Mossberg 500 w/ a smoothbore 28" vented barrel. I was shooting Brenneke KO slugs with it out to 50 yards, bead sights and it was VERY accurate.

Yea I hear ya on the price of sabots. Any recommendations on sabots? Never shot or shopped for them before.

So if I were to get a rifled barrel, should I spend $250 and get the scope/barrel/integral rail combo?...
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mossberg-Barre...ns/4956489

...or spend $166 and get the railed barrel only and buy a different scope?...
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mossberg-500-S...el/4242371

...or spend $155 and get the plain barrel with fiber optic sights and mount a rail to the receiver and buy a different scope to go there?...
