Holster on side of BOB
#1
Ok folks. I was looking at bags the other night (thinking about building a better BOB). Well I saw these bags that had a holster on the side of them. I believe I was looking at fishing gear bags. I had the idea to make something up like that for a future 511 BOB, I'd say one for about 48hrs and every time I needed to get out of the truck and scout for supply's.

I am wondering how you would feel about keeping your main secondary on your bag side. I would be walking and clearing with a primary, but in case of altercation and loosing your primary weapon it might be better on your bag because they would be /checking your hip for a firearm during a scuffle. "not your bag."

Just an Idea I would like opinions on.

I can see it like that, but it's exposed, which means its going to be exposed to the elements while you're carrying your bag, its obvious to anyone that sees your bag, would be more prone to getting stolen, and might be hard to grab when your primary goes down, depending on if you've dropped your bag to fight or how you're carrying it. It'd be easier for someone to go by you or your bag and just yank the gun without you knowing to steal/attack you. IK that argument has been made for OC, but considering you'd have your back to the holster and its not attached to your body, I'd say that threat is amplified here.

I think that having it in the bag is the better way to go, but that's just one man's opinion.

Any links?

Very understandable, I am A die hard OCer myself and I have herd that argument wayyy to many times. But I agree on this situation. But for my situation I will have a G27 on ankle strap so the bag secondary would not matter if I couldn't get to it.

Keep in mind I would be doing a lot of my supply hunting at night anyhow, so visibility of whats on my bag is less.

I will find a link stat.

It might not be a bad idea to keep a firearm with your BOB kit. On the outside would make access easier.

About being searched... anyone doing a search of you is probably going to look at your bag and see your gun on the outside. Also, if you needed the firearm quickly you would have deal with getting it from your bag. I would see having a backup BUG in the kit, but I think it would be better to keep a secondary weapon on your person just in case you quickly need it.

That is the closest I could find from what I found before but it was a removable holster like that but on the side..

And I agree with you, like I said I would have a ankle holseter with G23 gen 4.

No matter how secure on the outside, it's still exposed (people know you're armed), it's TEMPTING (people might want to STEAL it), and it's not good OPSEC.

Open carry on one's person is ONE thing, but a visible, UN-secured, firearm is another. [Image: unsure.gif]

Yeah, My neighbor is really good with sewing things. He made a soft top for his jeep. And he made a few mods to my soft top on my K-5 for me Wink..

I'm thinking about seeing if we can make a light Velcro slit on the back pad part of the bag and put a holster inside of it. SO all I'd have to do is slide my hand behind my back and into the bag Smile and it won't be visible.

Most Maxpedition bags have a nice "hidden" compartment for just such applications. I say hidden because if your pack is being searched I'm sure they will be thorough. However for fast access off the body carry the Maxpedition Gearslinger and Versapaks are awesome. I don't know how well it works for the bigger packs yet.

My EDC bag is a Sitka Gearslinger(a little less manpurse like than the Versapacks), I have carried my P229 in it to try it. But I'm not a fan of off the body carry.
