Of their house at a "low" price.

The market practically jumps at you.

You would think that wouldn't ya? Most of the lazy people aren't willing to pay for a setup that would be able to do that. There are some people that go whole hog and get massive setups professionally installed, but I don't think there's that many.

I've run across a couple of start up companies in the past few years in this area that were trying to make a go of it, I don't think they're around anymore, because there just isn't a demand for it.

IMO, the HA is mostly populated by hobbyists, like myself with a smattering of companies that do professional installs for the affluent. If I had the money, I wouldn't even be bothering with ZWave or any thing else, I'd be going straight into PLC's and SCADA systems.

I don't even know what 90% of the buttons on my TV remote do.

"Automating" my home would be a bad idea to say the least.
The closest thing we have to automated is the programmable thermostat, and when the battery dies my wife handles it. You shouldn't need an instruction manual to have the furnace turn on and off.

I just added another device to my system. Last year I installed an extra set of flood lights onto my garage, but they weren't X10 lights like the other ones. I installed an X10 Switch for those lights instead and configured them that they'll turn on whenever one of the other X10 motion sensing lights turn on, and turn off when they turn off. Now the entire driveway should light up and my surveillance cameras can see the entire area.

Nice. That is a pretty good idea actually.
This will be the best security for maintaining our liberties. A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins. -Ben Franklin

Cool, I just got the text to speech component working. Now when events occur in the automation system it confirms the event by speaking any phrase I want.

But what should trigger it?

A calendar event for the annual family reunion and barbecue at your house?

My heat automatically turns off when all of the wood gets burned up. Shrug

My cell phone automatically dies when I forget to charge it. Rolleyes

Yeah, that's about it.

Eventually I'll look into all that fancy stuff, just for the sole purpose of saving energy. Right now I'm more focused on basic stuff like insulation.
